Interesting look at the USA women's team back in 1953 and 1957, when they won international championships.

what I find interesting is the attendance figures of those day.

For the last Worlds in Brazil, you could turn up on the day of a match and buy a ticket and then with the exception of the VIP area sit in anywhere.

WOW. That's really cool stuff.

I loved the names...."Agnes, Fern, Mildred..." Hehe...and then these: "here were a host of pioneers who laid the groundwork for USA Basketball in international hoops. Alberta Cox, Joan Crawford, Katherine Washington, Nera White - " (....just picturing Mommy Dearest on a pick 'n roll)

If you read far enough to see the account of USA's '57 medal game with Russia (USSR), and do a little math, you can see the two teams scored 11 points in the final 13 seconds...impressive!

And the attendance! 30,000!! Dang...those days are long gone!

By the way, was this basketball the old 6 on 6? Just wondering...

Nope, standard basketball as it was then. No shot clock and no three pointers.

The only disappointment with the team is that it wasn't integrated. The NBA, NFL, and MLB had all broken the color line by then.

It's an interesting question about integration... 'cause Missouri Aldridge out of Philander Smith was a AAU all-Am along with Joan (and probably Nera)

some of the greatest players of all time imo. Years ago and I dont remember where they came from, but ended up with a small pile of college signed pictures, other photos, etc.

All of Joan Crawford, Alberta Cox and others....Probably one of their teammates

On the Attendance. Iowa was drawing crowds like that back in the 1940s for their high school tournament at the Drake.
