Just saw this on twitter.
My heart is broken - that was my favorite Western Conference team.

| hopefully the Bay Area talks will pan out. Mel Greenberg just said they move, as did Whiz's quotes.

It's not surprising that the Monarchs folded, in some ways, given the small crowds this summer and the continuing deterioration of the Kings, but it is surprising that there were no hints that this was going to happen.
The Maloofs, though, make their money in Las Vegas, which is struggling in this economy, and the Kings are losing tons of money, and apparently the $500,000 or so that the Monarchs lost last summer (just a wild guess) was too much to absorb.
If Chris Cohan suffers the same fate in Oakland and is forced to sell the Warriors, it could be an easy transition.

Holy shit.
Interesting that the league quickly put out a release that they are in talks to relocate to the Bay Area: http://www.wnba.com/news/monarchs_091120.html
Wow, just wow.
Another original WNBA franchise gone.

There has been talk of Cohan selling to Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison...

But it's never been made clear how serious that was._________________ http://www.swishappeal.com

Oh shit! Too much info all at once!
Monarchs fold. Maybe moving to the Bay Area. And Lynx could maybe move up in the draft to boot?!

The WNBA doesn't have a lot of time to get a Bay Area deal done.
Schedules have to be made, arenas have to be booked. That process has to get underway months and months before the season kicks off. It's now late November. Dispersal or relocation...got to be decided soon.

| the maloofs said that they folded the monarchs so THEY COULD FOCUS ON THE KINGS FRANCHISE! THEY FOLDED THE MONARCHS BECAUSE THEY ARE AFRAID OF WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE KINGS!!! Does this really make sense?

Sorry for the local Monarch's fans, players and coaches, et al.
We need a woman with a big purse to help boost the WNBA and make it a profitable institution. Hey Oprah! Whatcha doin' after you end your show next year? Holla!

This doesn't surprise me at all. When I started noticing sparse ARCO crowds for the Kings (2008-09), it was only a matter of time before the Monarchs folded. The Maloofs are really fickle about their $$. They'll overpay a washed-up NBAer before they're willing to keep taking losses from their WNBA team.
It's best for the fans to move the team to the Bay Area, but how competitive would that team be if Whiz is still infecting this team with his sorry ass decision making? Sorry, but I say do what's best for the league in the short term and disperse the talent so that the players who wouldn't cut it anywhere else but Sacramento are weeded out for good. Great players like Brunson will definitely find a home (New York). Good players like Maiga-Ba, Penicheiro, and Powell will be rotation players elsewhere. Decent players like Lawson should have no trouble finding a team. The rest will struggle, especially Scho Ro (rookie contract has ended) and Chelsea. |
