St. Louis Athletica lose leading scoring Daniela to knee injury

Washington's Abby Wambach took out Daniela's left leg, which left her on the pitch. She was carried off the field.

Wasn't Daniela the one that broke Wambach's leg during the friendly against Brazil before the 2008 Olumpics? If it was, what goes around comes around!

Not sure about the Wambach connection, but this is bad for St. Louis. Daniela was really coming on strong for them. She scored 2 goals in their last match. Tough loss for a team already struggling offensively.

Abby Wambach broke her leg in a collision with Andreia Rosa.

Yes, well, Abby played a very direct role in this accident since it was her tackle of Daniela that directly caused the injury, which doesn't bode well for Abby's own karma.

From today's Washington Post "Soccer Insider" blog:

Quote:
*The WPS Disciplinary Committee determined that Freedom forward Abby Wambach should not be subjected to further disciplinary measures for her tackle that left St. Louis star Daniela with a cracked tibia and ligament damage. However, Commissioner Tonya Antonucci "may independently exercise her discretion to further review the match and assess penalties based upon conduct that is detrimental to the best interests of WPS, the integrity of its matches and the protection of its players." She will announce the results of her findings by the end of today.

The league reviewed the game, gave Abby a suspension, gave McNeill (the center back) of the Athetica players a suspension and, in effect, said that the referee was not capable to ref games at this level.

And how exactly did they say the referee were not capable to ref games at this level, was it the part where they say the did not find anything to over-rule the referees decisions to further disciplinary measures?

Quote:

his week the League Disciplinary Committee completed its review of a number of on-field incidents in the May 3, 2009, game between the Washington Freedom and Saint Louis Athletica. In the Committee’s collective opinion, none of them met the very specific criteria for over-ruling the decisions of the game referee and therefore further disciplinary measures were not imposed. Under the relevant rule, the Committee must be unanimous that the play in question is a clear and unequivocal red card. That was not the case for any of the incidents reviewed. Under the framework of this rule, the egregious or reckless nature of any given play is not a sufficient basis for a suspension absent the Committee’s agreement on the red card.

Statement from WPS Commissioner Tonya Antonucci:

"I elected to review the circumstances of the Freedom-Athletica match out of concern that the nature of play, if left unchecked, could lead to circumstances in future games that might pose a threat to the safety of the players and to the integrity of the league. In addition to the issuance of the discipline in the Decision above, I have directed that the circumstances of this match be brought to the attention of the US Soccer Federation, which provides referee assignments for WPS matches, and that serious consideration be given to avoiding these circumstances when making future referee assignments."

That is where the Commissioner said the ref was incompetent.

Hope that helps. Wink
