Well, I think it's a good choice. I mean, how can you argue against Geno?!

They obviously changed the rule that said an HC from the W had to be the HC...

It's a rule that had to be changed. 1996 (Vanderveer) and 2008 (Krzyzewski) showed the basketball world that college coaches could lead pros to Olympic gold. The likes of Zierden, Meadors, and Key should not be "more qualified" to coach an Olympic team than Geno, Pat, Tara (who's already coached), etc.

Pat Summitt was also the Olympic coach in 1984.

And Kay Yow was the coach in the 1988 Olympics.
That was back when the coaches were assistants on the prior team. Sue Gunter was an assistant in 1976 and the HC in 1980. Pat was an assistant in 1980 and the HC in 1984. Kay was an assistant in 1984 and was the HC in 1988.
Was Grentz (Rutgers, 1992) an assistant under Yow? Was Tara an assistant under Grentz? Because I know Fortner (2002) was an assistant under Tara.
Was that a rule, that you had to be an assistant the prior year to be the HC?
Anyway, I like the rule change. The best coaches in WBB are in the college ranks, not the WNBA.

I like Mike Thibault as a coach but Geno was the obvious choice. I'm THRILLED if this is true.

According to the USA Basketball website, Theresa Grentz was not an assistant in 1988 and Tara VanDerveer was not an assistant in 1992. Nell Fortner was not an assistant in 1996 either.

Nell was an assistant under Tara but wasn't an assistant during the Olympics. I believe that took place between her stints at La Tech and Purdue.
Sylvia Hatchell was the main assistant in 1988 under Kay.

Maybe Nell was an assistant during the college tour?

I guess.
She may have not coached the Olympics due to her taking the Purdue job that started that Fall.

That would make sense, since she was just hired.

Has geno EVER won a gold medal as a head coach in USA bball?..NO!
and he will NOT be able to treat pro players like he treats Charles;
not my first choice; great college coach--...but Laimbeer or Thibault or Staley. or Goestenkors.....would have been better;
