Sunday’s Inaugural Match start of the journey for Freedom, Sol
Quote:
A parade of nations, during which every country represented by the inaugural WPS rosters will be represented, will precede the opening kickoff. Mia Hamm, the iconic American goal scorer whose silhouette graces the league logo, will be at midfield to hand off the official match ball to the referees. The match will feature the domestic debut of Marta, the return to competitive action by Abby Wambach, and a unique opportunity for fans to gain instant insight from players as the Sol’s Aly Wagner and the Freedom’s Kati Jo Spisak will be tweeting throughout the afternoon.
“This is an exciting time for all of us,” said WPS Commissioner Tonya Antonucci, who will also be tweeting from the Inaugural Match. “It’s time to show the fans what they want to see, which is world class soccer played by the world’s best players.”

wonder why it says 2:30 is the start time when the schedule says 3:00?

2.30 the TV program, 3.00 the kick-off, would be my guess. That's usually the reason for those differences.

Duan and Marta are showing already that they'll be a lethal combination.

I'm not sure if she ever made any actual contact with ball. It might have to go down as a Scurry own goal if they wanted to be strictly accurate, but I doubt they'll change it for the inaugural WPS goal.

Pretty decent argument that it was just a foul, as well.

That what I was thinking when the showed the replay, it looked like Briana Scurry lost hold of the ball when she got hit by Allison Falk. It could be scored as an own goal, not sure how they will determine though or if they will change it.

YES LA SOL WIN!!! Very Happy

This was a great game, the Washington freedom came out strong in the 2nd half and came close to scoring a few times.

I love the team the LA Sol have put together, the international players came on strong, they had such an impact on the team and the game. I can't wait for the rest of the season to see how the LA Sol as they continue to improve and have more time together as team.

Falk, Abily score in Sol opener
Quote:
Girls held up flags from every country before the game and soccer great Mia Hamm was part of the pregame hoopla. Hamm, who has twin daughters, was excited about the new league.

“As a mother of twins, who one day might be out on the field themselves, the opportunity for young girls and women to play world class professional soccer in their country is something very special,” she said.

The opener drew 14,832 to the Home Depot Center—which has a capacity of 27,000. The Sol were initially expecting somewhere around 10,000.

on the FSC broadcast one announcer picked Allison Falk because she scored the first goal in WPS history. The other announcer picked Marta because she occupied the defense the majority of the game and she assisted on the second goal.

Sorry I don't remember the names of the announcers.

I know I've said it before, but I really enjoyed watching Duan and Marta work on offense together. They were really aggressive and Washington never could really get a lot of offensive touches themselves because of LA's aggression on offense. LeBlanc was also impressive. I love Bri, but I think the game has passed her.

Ugh, I can't believe I picked the World Cup qualifier game over this one. Shoulda known watching Marta is always better than watching the men getting their asses kicked by freaking Ecuador.
Anyway, good start by the Sol already beating one of their top opponents.
Too bad Marta didn't score, but that will come. It's good to have options on offense so she doesn't have to carry the load.

Does anyone know where I could find a complete box for of the game, in the article they only have a simplified version of the box score on the website?

Was busy at the time...but I see that the attendance was great for the game, and it seems like it was just a great debut for the league all-together.

Soccer stats are meaningless to me. What matters is the ball in the net. Like for instance yesterday I swear to God our goalie was a miracle worker, I don't think I've seen a performance by a goalie like that in a loooong time. He almost worked a final miracle, but the only chance we got, we scored and then it didn't matter how many shots at goal the other team got, they didn't score (until they did).
It's a freaking weird game...and like I've said, the unthinkable happens way too often (in elimination games, especially) for stats to matter.
Of course you can look at missed passes, corners, but you can't take a whole lot from looking at boxscores as is the case with other team sports.
I wasn't very helpful was I? Laughing
