Hopefully to make room for Tina, Nykesha, Michelle, ...

Or Cap space.

Or maybe she requested it.

Or maybe she will now become an assistant coach like when PHX waived Pettis and announced she was now the asst coach.

If she is waived, I have to imagine Yo is on her way out aswell

Maybe they just found out that LJ would be signing with Phoenix so right now they're in rebuilding mode.... If that was the case they wouldn't need Swoopes, especially with only being able to carry 11 this season.

Hmm, what if Swoopes and Thompson signed with LA.

But at the end of last year, Sheryl said if she was going to return this season she would be with Seattle. And Agler agreed. Interesting. Hopefully, she wasn't blind sided by this.

Maybe she's making a retirement announcement, and this waiver just got out first..

Is it true that once a player is waived their salary does not count against the salary cap anymore? If that's the case LA could make room...

Max players- Leslie, Milton-Jones, Swoopes, Thompson, MFH...

rookie deals- parker, bobbit, spencer, 11st round pick

unknown- hayden-johnson, tameka johnson (unsigned)

waive the rest...

johnson/bobbitt
swoopes/mfh
milton-jones/spencer
parker/thompson
leslie/hayden-johnson

add that with the first round draft pick.

lol maybe it could work...

I loved when "granny" Swoopes jukes CP3 in gm 2 in seattle. That was so sweet!

Beyond the self evident contradiction of the Sparks having their own special cap, how much do you really think a 38 year old coming off of a 7 ppg on 39% shooting season, on the heels of a season where she was hurt all year, will actually command in this market? I love Her Majesty and all, but she's not exactly a max caliber player anymore.

I seriously doubt she's retiring.

Why not?

At this point, the only thing she could possibly be playing for is the possibility of a championship. If she doesn't think Seattle will get one this year, and doesn't want to go anywhere else, then why wouldn't she retire?

If Swoopes was going to play this season then they would have traded her for at least a measly 2nd rd pick or something to a team she wanted to play for if she didn't want to play with the storm....she has probably chosen retirement, just wondering why it is a waive not retire transaction

From the coach's words today, it sounded like they needed cap space and a lot was going to depend on other things.

It was telling that Swoopes was at the Husky game today but did not attend the fan event.

She still makes a home here in Seattle...perhaps she has other plans.

Maybe they waived her to make room for some players they really want to sign. And if she is waived, I think that frees her of that max contract. They probably needed those dollars. I just which that she would have retired as a Comet. Maybe LJ would only come back if they let Swoopes go. And CB, why didn't you tells us about this or even the people that went to the storm STH event?

I think this could mean Yo is coming back. There's no way the salary #'s would work if we're adding Janell Burse to a team that was already maxed out.

I've seen two people post "no LJ" for the Storm now, is that suddenly a fact or still speculation?

i think its a good possibility that she's retiring. She might still be having problems from last seasons injuries and whatnot. She might not want to retire she might be forced to retire this year. Same with Yo, but shes turning into the Brett Favre of the WNBA so theres no telling

UGHH. I am not happy. This is shocking to me.
The Storm better have something up their sleeve and LJ BETTER be coming back now. I don't get it. The announcement on the Storm website says it was to clear cap space... but obviously LJ, Sue, Sheryl, Swin, and Yo couldn't have all been making max. salary last year. I know LJ, Sue, and Swin were since when we got her via trade with Detroit she was cored by Detroit. So it seems very unlikely that either Swoopes or Yo had max. contracts. Sooo I'm still missing the whole salary cap part. If Swoopes isn't making the max. amount of money and it comes down to having Swoopes and Tanisha Wright for SG they are crazy if they are going to cut Swoopes over Tanisha.

Either way... I'm not happy! There better be some big trade or big signing coming out of this!

if she was going to retire why not announce a retirement instead of being waived? She might be looking for another team if Seattle doesn't want her.

I found the answer

The Storm waived Sheryl Swoopes due to her contract cost and the need of depth at the PG and post positions.
