Pistons have a game in Toronto on Wednesday, then a game in New Jersey on Friday, so a little detour from his broadcasting gig to Washington for the press conference on Thursday would make some sense if it's Mahorn.

The only reason I think it's not Mahorn is that the MFO is really committed to having the GM and Coach live "in market" all year round. Mahorn seems too tied to Detroit to do that. But perhaps if they felt Mahorn was the best qualified in terms of all the other criteria, they'd give up on that, or maybe he's ready for a move to DC. Just speculation on my part. We'll know in two days!

I'm torn on this.
Mahorn vs. BL would be a great story line, but it would get completely overblown by Doris and friends. It would be all we hear about every time either team plays and some of the time when neither team is involved.
The fact is, there aren't any clear cut sure-fire winners out there. The Mystics will more or less be taking a chance on someone.

Reeve would be long haul...But mahorn is the quick, hard, turn it NOW NOW NOW and HARD fix that Johnson seemed to be wanting. I agree that It will be Mahorn. He was in the running before in DC.
I would be really polishing the resume if I was Alana Beard or Mo Currie.

If Angela Taylor hires Anne Donovan, then Sheila Johnson made the wrong choice for GM.
Though Donovan managed to guide the U.S. to a gold in Beijing, there were many stumbles along the way -- and she was forced out in Seattle either because the Storm management wasn't happy or USA Basketball wasn't happy.
And if Mahorn is the Pistons' TV analyst, which is what I gather, how can he scout at the college level during the offseason, or travel overseas to meet with his players? It would seem that the Mystics would have a part-time coach in a league where every other coach is full-time, and though there may not be a lot of advantages for a full-time coach, there are clearly some -- and Washington would have none of them.

Just curious, where was it in the Post? I did not see anything about them except in the comments on the blog.
I know Mahorn interviewed, but have not read anything in press about Donovan interviewing. |
Team and league sources have confirmed that both Detroit Shock assistants, Cheryl Reeve and Rick Mahorn, have interviewed for the position along with 2008 U.S. women's Olympic coach Anne Donovan. Mahorn, who has ties to the Washington area from his days with the NBA's Bullets, and Donovan are seen as front-runners for the job.

I'd be surprised if it was Mahorn...not because he's not qualified...he is qualified. However, his ties to Detroit are just too strong.

I don't think Donovan as a head coach is that bad (World Champs fiasco notwithstanding). Her biggest issue was her being GM *and* coach, thus making her life as a coach harder by being a terrible GM.
I just think they could do a lot worse than hiring Donovan as the head coach...

I agree. I mean, she does have a WNBA title. Not many coaches can say that.

But isn't that the Mystics' strategy?
Their motto is: "It could be worse...just look at who used to be the coach/GM."

Well, yeah, inadvertently, but yeah. I guess what I'm trying to say is there aren't many names out there that could really have a major impact unless the GM is able to put together a decent roster. That and AD isn't a bad choice, IMHO.

Why does Cheryl Miller's name come up on this board every single time there is an opening?
1) Miller has no interest in the WNBA. She loves her TNT gig and makes a shitload doing it.
2) Miller was a great motivator, but worked best when she had a lot of talent (Gillom in her prime, Brandy Reed, Timms still able to contribute, etc.). She is not great with young players unless they are supremely talented. And she certainly isn't the right coach for a team that needs to rebuild.
