think the salary issue is the most likely here. it's sad, but if i had a cap to think about, would i want to spend 80K on Andrea?

Could she sign for less?

what i don't understand is what phoenix got out of this. i mean, if they didn't want plenette, they could have waived her to make room for stepanova. why would they trade for someone they had no intention of using? what am i missing?

Well they got a second round pick out of it. Better than nothing I guess Rolling Eyes

OH! bad reading comp. sorry. i think i saw 'waived Andrea Stinson' and just started freaking out. thanks for the clarification.

Getting cut before July 1 means she gets no further pay.

She could surface with another team, or she could be back with the Merc after Stepanova's departure.

Does it also mean, that her tenure will make her expensive, as in if she signs she will get a minimum that is higher than a 2 or 3 year vet?

Nancy Lieberman's story said that Stepanova is leaving at the end of July. I've heard other dates, but nobody has suggested that she's staying the whole season.

Stinson's minimum salary would be 45427, prorated for whatever portion of the season she signs for.

2005 WNBA Transactions

June 29
The Phoenix Mercury traded forward Plenette Pierson to the Detroit Shock for Andrea Stinson and Detroit's 2006 second round Draft pick.
The Phoenix Mercury have waived Andrea Stinson and activated Maria Stepanova.

My only strong feeling on this trade is that the Merc should have been able to get more for Pierson.

Like I said on the other board, GM's know stuff we don't so maybe there is something we don't know that made trading for her something no one else wanted to do?

For those of you wondering why Phoenix waived Stinson, think about it a minute. Phoenix had to make a cut. It is obvious from the past couple of years that her game has been going downhill. To keep Stinson, Phoenix would have had to waive a younger player with a potential upside or Kayte or Lisa, both of whom are fan favorites - and, IMO, contribute as much as what Stinson would have. It is less painful for the Phoenix fans this way.

I don't like to see any of the former "stars" of the league in this situation. All should be given a chance to bow out gracefully and it is unfortunate that Stinson did not get that chance. The season is not over, however. Things could change. Who knows. Detriot could pick her up again. Phoenix is the only team who can not sign her for the next 30 days.

And for those of you thinking that Seth might have gotten hosed on this deal. I, for one, am wondering if this might be some pay back on Seth's part. Evil or Very Mad But that is JMO.

Has Sandora Irvin been "cleared to begin playing on the court" yet?
