In the 2008 Olympics: Australia enters the gold medal game, like the USA, undefeated at 7-0. In preliminary group play, the Aussies topped Belarus 83-64, Brazil 80-65, South Korea 90-63, Latvia 96-73 and Russia 75-55. Australia advanced as Group A's No. 1 seed and downed Czech Republic 79-46 in the quarterfinals and China 90-56 in the semifinals to advance to Saturday's final. Lauren Jackson, a two-time WNBA MVP, led the Opals with 18 points against Belarus, 30 points against Latvia, 16 points against Russia, and 17 against Czech Republic. Laura Summerton tallied a team-high 18 points against Brazil, 2006 World Championship MVP Penny Taylor scored 18 against South Korea and Belinda Snell recorded 16 points against China. [More]

Will our Aussie friends be satisfied with a third straight Silver Medal?

I certainly won't be unhappy.
I thought Russia could challenge us for a top 2 finish, but this tournament has proven that we're still a level above them, even with their new rent-a-chucky policy.
A gold would obviously rock, and isn't beyond the realms of possibility if we play at our best, but when you look down the respective rosters there's no real comparison, and Van Chancellor isn't coaching any more, so it's a huge ask.

I hope this game is close, both sides play to their highest level, and it's entertaining. I despise watching one team dominate early in the games... guess that's the price of being an American I suppose. haha

The stars would have to align perfectly for the Aussies the way they did for the Ruskies in 2006. Hard to come by twice, but who knows...it might happen. I don't think so though.
And it's not because Triple L is back. It's because the US have Sylvia Fowles and the Aussies don't.

He gave the aussies every chance to win in Athens. We just weren't good enough to overcome the pure talent gap, after matching the USA for much of the game from memory, until Penny sat with foul trouble.
I remember being a little sad on behalf of the Opals when he was replaced.

Donovan ain't nearly the coach Van the Man is. OTOH, she's got a dramatically superior roster to work with. Van had Staley on her last legs, Ruth Riley as a bench anchor, and Katie Smith out of the medal rounds.

Is 9:00am Pacific Time (taped) on NBC the correct television time?

Early line has USA -8.5, but I don't think it'll be that close.
