I think Latvia could surprise some people. I'll take them over Japan.
Doesn't some team from Africa get a bid through their thing? Has that already happened?

Yes, Mali already qualified as the African Region champs. From now on, regions are not a factor. The 5 best teams qualify.
Funny tidbit (well, maybe not for Sparks fans). Marta Fernandez was not selected for the Spanish NT. Apparently, the coach thinks she's expendable.

Is there a roster for the Spanish NT online somewhere? Are the 2 GWU grads - Montanana and Aguilar - on the team?

I think i'd swap Japan for Latvia. I don't see the Japanese making it.
It should be an interesting tournament. Hopefully we have some upsets.

How did Brazil and Spain end up in the same group? Those are the only two I vaguely recognize as being worth anything, except maybe the Czechs. Didn't Cuba fall off the face of the earth in the last few years?

I'm going with Latvia over Japan as well. The other four should be Brazil, Cuba, Spain & Czech Republic.

The toss-up group definitely looks like Group A. I could see that finishing with all three teams 1-1, and the calculators being pulled out to find the winner. Largely speaking, the other groups have either an obvious minnow or a likely winner.
It's bizarre. The nature of the tournament means that it may be the first one I've ever seen where if you win you get to go home, while the quarter-final losers have to stick around and carry on playing. Just feels weird.

Spain beat Fiji 113-42 (ouch).
Taipei vs Cuba about to tip off. I am going to enjoy lunch watching the game. I hate us for losing to Cuba last year...

Latvia came out of the gates well, with a 94-34 win over Senegal.
Also, Cuba pulled away from Chinese Taipei, winning 96-79.
The last game of the day is Argentina vs. Czech Republic.

Results no one's reported yet: Czech Republic eventually pull away from Argentina 77-55 in the last game yesterday, Cuba beat Belarus 68-58 in the first game today to win their group, Japan sneaked past Senegal 71-69 (so Japan-Latvia essentially have a play-off for the group tomorrow, but both are already through), and Brazil are currently in the process of stuffing the hell out of Fiji (surprise).

Hey BCBG, how much WNBA potential does Jucimara(or Mama) have? Seems like she put up good numbers and she looks somewhat strong. I hadn't heard of her until today. |
Well, it *was* Fiji and they're kinda short. She's been playing in Spain the last few seasons, so I only get to see her play in the BNT and even then, not a whole lot.
She's playing basically because Érika can't go, but she's serviceable. Not WNBA material though, too slow and not very tough. But the usual disclaimer applies, she's a good offensive player.

Mamá's statistics for Villeneuve d'Ascq this past winter can be found here and here. She did turn 30 in February, so a WNBA future is probably unlikely...
Argentina and Sénégal followed Fiji through the two-and-out door today. Yuko Oga had 13 points and four assists in Japan's 71-69 victory over Sénégal. Tomorrow's Belarus/Chinese Taipei winner will round out the quarterfinal field...

Will they even play games that don't matter tomorrow? For example, Spain vs. Brazil really doesn't matter at this point.

They all matter. The games left in groups A, B and C decide who wins the group, which means you play a runner-up in the quarter-finals. The game left in Group D decides who goes through to the quarters in second.
It's impossible to have a completely meaningless game in this format.
ETA: For example, the winner of Brazil-Spain gets to play either Belarus or Chinese Taipei in the quarter-final, the loser gets to play Cuba.
