...the following rookies for making the final rosters.

Marcedes Walker(Houston), Allie Quigley(Phoenix), Chioma Nnamaka(Atlanta), Danielle Page(Connecticut), Sequoia Holmes(Houston), Kamela Gissendanner(Los Angeles), Willnett Crocket(Phoenix), Brooke Smith(Phoenix), Charel Allen(Sacarmento), A'Quonesia Franklin(Sacramento), Izabela Piekarska(Sacramento) & Krystal Vaughn(Washington).

I don't think anyone had thought that the majority of these players would be on rosters come opening day.

Don't forget Kimberly Beck in Seattle, a 3rd round draft choice.

Hey, I thought Marcedes would be drafted as it was, so while I'm psyched for her, I'm not that surprised that she stuck somewhere. Kimberly Beck does surprise me, because she is so slender and looks much smaller in person than she does on TV. I didn't think GMs would see past her size, and I wasn't sure she had the stuff for the pro game to begin with. Not saying she didn't, just that I wasn't sure, having only seen her a handful of times (one of which was against Rutgers this past season, and she had an awful game).

How about a special category for Charel Allen -- like "Biggest surprise to GM's, but not to fans and the press." Laughing

Yippee, Brooke Smith made the Mercury!

Yippee, Charel Allen and Aqua Franklin made the Monarchs!

Yippee, Lindsay Taylor made the Mystics!

Just some youngsters I was pulling for.

Iza from UTEP surprises me the most.

To be honest, I knew a lot of these players had the game to play in the league, but I questioned whether they'd get a fair shot.

Heck, if we had Charel, Keisha Brown would not have made the team. Cool

My biggest surprise is Kamela Gissendanner. She made a stack Sparks roster as a undrafted free agent, that's impressive. I remember her from the Big Ten for a long time, I always remembered who she was because I always thought she looked real old, like a older lady with them bangs she have. She played pretty well for Penn State whenever I watched her though and its good to see someone from the Big Ten making a roster this year as a rookie.

I'm not surprised Beck made it (because I've seen her and followed her more than most), but I am very happy for her. She's in a great situation in Seattle and it's an ideal role for her -- give Sue a breather and make good passes to LJ, Sheryl, Swin and Yo.

Congrats to Kim. Another GW grad in the W. Smile

I am pleased for Beck making the roster as well. As a third round pick with a serviceable backup available in Lewis, she had to show that she could be a long term solution at backup point to get the job. She delivered.

Wow Morenike Atunrase was not on toad list but YAHOO I was SO happy to see Atunrase make the Silver Stars!!!

Atunrase and Aqua Franklin were both a part of the Texas A&M Aggies that I got to watch play now and then over the last 2-3 years.

PostPosted: 05/17/08 10:06 am    ::: Krystal Vaughn! Reply Reply with quote

As a Mystics fan who was throwing things at the screen and generally cursing their draft picks, I am very pleasantly surprised that the third round pick played her way onto the team!!!

Krystal Vaughn is the player to salvage this year's draft for the Mystics. By now, second round pick Lindsey Pluimer is as long gone as I knew she would be the second I heard her name. Crystal Langhorne is trying like crazy to bring her points/rebounds record-setting game to the Pro level. Give her an "E" for effort.

Maybe, just maybe, with mentoring from a same sized post in Taj will eventually turn Crystal into a decent post player for the Mystics. But lottery/potential All*Star? I'm not holding my breath.

Back to Krystal Vaughn. The descriptions I've heard out of camp paint her as having a similar game to Mo Currie. They've got the slashing, the rebounding game. But Mo has worked feverishly on her 3 pt shot, necessary to keep defenses honest. Krystal will have to do the same to get all those back up minutes. Especially with none of the post players having any 3 pt shot at all, the Styx have got to get 3 pointers from the '3' spot. And the '2'. And the '1'.
