There was a professional women's sports league that had just finished its 4th season when the NBA first came together, the AAGPBL. They, in some cases, drew better than top men's teams playing the same sport in the same market. Two years after that, in 1948, the women baseballers had attendance of 910000, a number the NBA was still struggling to reach as late as 1954-55, after the AAGPBL had folded. I find it hard to believe you're going to argue that that the USA of the 1940's and 50's was more accepting of women as athletes than the USA of today.
