I'm breaking down and buying an Ipod to listen to audio books on. What do you think of the current line up? You think this Shuffle sucker is okay for $99? I can fit a lot books on 512 MB.

I just answered my own question. This Thomas Freidman The World is Flat book is 538 MB. Shit.

heeeyyyyyyy, what's wrong with you? callin' my name out and all?

just audio books, huh? that's it? okay, well, my fellow ipod nuts - all of us are now convinced that if we were as spoiled as to run out and get shuffles, that a new shuffle would come out with a real display right afterward. you do know, don't you, that there's no display, right? not sure how that'd work with books. the whole point is that the player is a, well, shuffle player. but with a display, at least you could see how far you had to fast-forward to the next tune (or book). anyway, regardless of that, you should wait because an asian tech site is reporting that apple is pushing out a 2gig and a 4gig shuffle next month and august, respectively. apple isn't confirming, but that's how apple is. this story is fairly new, so i haven't seen anything on price. it'll be interesting, because the ipod mini is 4gigs, too, and it costs $199. maybe the whole ipod line is shrinking, which would just blow every other mp3 player out of the water.

http://www.macobserver.com/article/2005/05/27.3.shtml

if i were you, i'd double-check on how shuffle would work with books. shouldn't be a problem - it's just a hard drive, after all. but i'd check anyway.

No, Reb. These are mp3s ripped from the audio CDs and so you know a lot is depending on the bit rate, etc.

The Great Gatsby was only 180 MB.

imho, for another $50 or so its worth it to get the 6gig mini. i had the 4, and that felt kind of cramped. unfortunately, the little shit started shrieking at me (the audio output is poorly connected to the logic board) so i was forced to let myself be given a 6gb as a gift. i have about 15 gigs in my itunes library, but i definitely don't mind swapping out. keeps things fresh.

jammer, also check out http://www.audible.com. i'm a this american life junkie, and i get my fix weekly via audible subscription. also, some great programs on wnyc have free "podcasts": http://www.wnyc.org

that's how apple messes with your head. they position all these products so that, no matter what you buy, you always want the better toy.

Wow. Cool websites. Audible gives you a three book free trial. Maybe they'll make an honest man out of me. Twisted Evil

Thanks, herrade.

Now about those meds...

Jammer:
Check out the Apple.com store's "special deals" page...they've got a 20 gig regular Ipod for $249. Your savings will almost pay for the Applecare extension on the warranty, which is highly recommended.

Ooh look at all that STUFF! Thanks, Stever. I bought a Thinkpad refurbished from IBM and it's been great. I'm looking at that G4 Powerbook. lol!

Yeah you can pick up the Ipod and get the extended warranty thrown in for the price of a new one.

Thanks a lot, Stever.

Ah, Thinkpads- workhorses of the laptop world. My Maggie's been going close to ten years now. Not that I ask her to do anything more complicated than a DOS-based game or two, but still.

iPods kick all kinds of ass. Even the oldest ones.

thinkpads are the best. can't imagine why road warriors would wanna carry anything else. not only are they super light but they're durable. you're right - no frills, but they get the job done. if you need frills, you can get a docking station for it (tho i wouldn't carry one on the road). my brother bought a toshiba satellite with every bell and whistle you can imagine. 17 inches! it weighs a ton. how do you travel with this, i asked. "oh, i'd never fly with it." hmmm. on top of that, inside of three months, the bad boy broke down. warranties are great, but not when you're without your laptop for 6-8 weeks.
