Yeah, it's time to look at this again.
I was right about 1-6, but Trudi kept going...

How can they notfire her at this point?
How bad was Donovan's early-season record a few years ago again?
Has any other coach kept her/his job after a start this bad, especially without injuries to blame it on (as in San Antonio)?

Donovan started 1-10 with the Sting in 2001.
The 1998 Mystics started 1-10. Coach Jim Lewis wasn't fired until the team was 2-16.
The 2002 Shock started 0-11. Coach Greg Williams was fired at 0-10.
That's all the teams that have started 1-10 or worse. Being on any list with the 1998 Mystics is a bad sign.

Didn't they finish with 3 wins that year? it was rather lowly for sure, I remember that much.

The 1998 Mystics finished 3-27, the worst record in WNBA history.

a couple brilliant postgame quotes:
Trudi, on losing again: "We knew this was going to be a rebuilding year and we just have to work our way through it. We made wholesale changes in the offseason and it's a transition.''
Staley, on getting sat for the end of the game: "She's our leader, that's our coach, and I have to respect her decision to do that. I'm a coach, so I can't be mad at the decisions she makes.''
wow.

Do you sign two high-profile (and one semi-high profile) new players for a rebuilding year?
No.

Perhaps this is the time to note that there has been at least one in-season coaching change in every WNBA season, and at least two in every season except 2000.

Exactly.
The only thing that's going to be rebuilt there is the coaching staff.

If it were a rebuilding year, wouldn't the #1 pick be getting more minutes?

In fairness, has the #1 pick been healthy enough to get a lot of minutes?

Now Trudi isn't really being very consistent. Clearly the writing is on the wall, this rebuilding stuff is the latest excuse. Peace out Trudi!

maybe we should start picking actual dates. i think the day she actually gets the boot will be the 29th or 30th - i can't decide. but i'm feeling like the announcement will be made on the 30th, the day they have the turnaround game in washington. reeve will take over in the interim, and there's really no reason why she can't ride out the rest of the season.
now, what i'd really like to have happen is the announcement that staley will become interim player/coach (donna o. will say, "why not?!"), and staley will wisely announce that, to do justice to the job, she'll voluntarily take herself out of the game as a player for the balance of the season.

Well, if Trudi survives the season, look for McCarville to be traded in the offseason and become a double-digit scorer somewhere else...so Trudi can rebuild again next year.

you really think trudi will still be around next season, even if they keep her through this one?

Not at all. I was just making a Powell reference with a history repeating itself thought for McCarville.

If it doesn't happen today, the 24th, my guess is that she'll last until after the next road trip. That would make it July 5th.

Donovan started 1-10 with the Sting in 2001. |
However, three of the losses were in OT and only two were by double digit points. And they were on the road for seven of the eleven games.
This year's Sting have more home games than roadies and most of their losses have been by 10+ points.
Anyone that was paying attention could tell that Donovan's Sting were better than their record. That's not so clear with Lacey's Sting.

maybe they're thinking the best thing they can do to at this point is to get positioned for another no. 1 draft pick - then lose trudi.
