With the recent passing of Kenny Rogers, it's worth noting that his signature song "The Gambler" was a cover. It was first recorded by 60's and 70's country star Bobby Bare:

Actually many of Rogers best known songs were covers:

Joan Jett has been mentioned several times in the thread, but on one has noted that her biggest hit was a cover

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/jUxsP8ED_cM" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

It was originally recorded by the Arrows in 1975

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8AT_Pbtyid0" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Sadly Arrows lead singer and writer of the song, Alan Merrill, passed away from the effects of COVID-19 on March 29.

Also of note, the Blackhearts hit version was not even Jett's first recording of the song. She recorded it, backed by the Sex Pistols, in 1979.

Of course, the legendary Rock & Roll Hall of Famer's (The Jackson Five) cover is the most celebrated version.

I just enjoyed looking through this entire thread. While there are several ways to consider covers, my idea is to take a well known song and redo it, particularly in a different way. In that regard, Proud Mary was mentioned only once. This was a great song and a huge hit by CCR but was reimagined and made great again by Tina Turner.

A song that wasn't mentioned is Handy Man. Jimmy Jones version was a big hit in 1960 and completely reimagined by James Taylor a few years after it appeared in American Graffiti.

But for pure fun, by far the greatest cover was of a song that was mentioned previously, Nilsson's Without You. The best known cover of Nilsson's cover was by Mariah Carey, but the cover of her rendition done on an international version is pure gold.

Remember this big hit from 1982?

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/nNEb2k_EmMg" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Well, it's a cover of an Italian song from 1979

The first English cover came later in '79 by Jonathan King

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ov4epAJRPMw" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ov4epAJRPMw

You may even know it was a #1 country hit for Hank Snow in 1962

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/nwPDETH2Bn8" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwPDETH2Bn8

Probably only luuuc knows it was originally performed by Australian singer Lucky Starr in 1959 (with Aussie towns, of course)

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ZeadSspZDzM" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The writer, Geoff Mack was also Australian. He wrote the American version using at Atlas, as he had never been to the Western Hemisphere.

Most likely, you heard Tina Turner's hit single of "What's Love Got To Do With It", but you probably never heard of this original by a British pop group called Bucks Fizz, who actually recorded this song just before Tina did. However, Tina's version was released to the public first, so Bucks Fizz shelved it until 2000, when it was included on a re-release of an older album.

Bucks Fizz had several hit singles in the U.K. in the early-1980's, but never made it big in the U.S.
