I recently discovered Cherrelle's "I didn't mean to turn you on." I grew up hearing the Robert Palmer version, which I still love. But I love Cherrelle's original, too. I didn't even know it existed, and I'm usually very knowledgeable about music.

Cherelle's music video of I Didn't Mean To Turn You On with King Kong break dancing is one of the best music videos of all time.

PEACE & LOVE GO MYSTICS!!!!!

Hurt - Covered by Johnny Cash

Quote:
'Hurt' is a song written by Trent Reznor, first released on Nine Inch Nails' 1994 album The Downward Spiral. In 2002, 'Hurt' was covered by Johnny Cash to critical acclaim; it was one of Cash's final hit releases before his death. Its accompanying video, featuring images from Cash's life and directed by Mark Romanek, was named the best video of the year by the Grammy Awards and CMA Awards, and the best video of all time by NME in July 2011. [1]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurt_%28Nine_Inch_Nails_song%29

Hurt plus the video made Cash a cult hero among a whole new young audience and cemented Cash's legendary status.

If I have one favorite record of all time it's 'Just My Imagination' by the Temptations. Amazingly. I actually also like the Babyface/Gwinith Paltrow version. Love her voice. Embarassed

I can't believe this version of "Gin and Juice" by The Gourds hasn't been mentioned yet.

Fun thread....many covers already noted make my list.

Generally speaking, any song Hendrix covered, qualifies. Whoever said SRV's cover of Voodoo Chile is better than the original is nuts. Smile

I'll add Stiff Little Fingers' cover of Marley's "Johnny Was". First time I heard it I was hanging out in Jersey and luckily had a tape rolling in my boom box while listening to some punk/alternative show on Princeton's radio station back in the early 80s.

That tape is somewhere in one of my long-ago-stored cassette racks- remember those cool wooden racks that held about 120 tapes?

I haven't been able to hear that particular studio version in more than a decade. I may have to organize a search party to find that treasure.

I've looked on youtube for it- no luck w/ that particular version, but I found a live one that closely resembles it. (I don't necessarily prefer studio
takes to live, but for this song, yes.) Production values are decent; the synch is slightly off.

So here is the closest version I can find. (I did find a CD on ebay that hopefully has the take I want. Years ago, in my quest to find it, I bought an LP which has one of the many different takes.)

Ladies and germs, SLF doing Johnny Was, live in Belfast, 1980:

It is tough to better Michael Jackson, but Esperanza Spalding does it here

Reportedly when Franklin heard Joplin's cover she didn't even recognize it as the same song

To me a great cover is something that takes a song and makes it different from the original...that makes it their own that can stand alone next to the original. Or even better.

Some Examples (Not already mentioned here of which there are some doozies Smile ):

Sonic Youth's dark cover of the Carpenter's Superstar

Dynamite Hack's FOLK cover of Easy E's Boys In the Hood

Black Crowes' version of Hard to Handle (one of my fave songs PERIOD)

Cardigan's Lounge act cover of Black Sabbath's Iron Man

Willie Nelson Covering the Scientist (And somehow made that song darker than the original)

The Ramones' cover of Surfin Bird (They made one of the worst songs ever written into something with a melody...that is why they're hall of fame quality folks LOL)

That's column A, Column B deals with songs that were overpopped and lost much of their meaning in the original or hit versions. Their covers reclaimed their essence and made BOTH versions more enjoyable.

Some Examples:

Gary Jules' Cover of Mad World by Tears for Fears

Placebo's Cover of Running up that Hill by Kate Bush

and a more mainstream example

Barenaked Ladies' cover of Bruce Cockburn's Lovers in a Dangerous time, a song that always hits me emotionally when things get poltically FD up...well written but the original was too 80s fied

Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah". One of those songs where the cover has become the version you think of first, whenever it is mentioned.

Everyone knows 1985's Holding Back the Years by Simply Red:

What you probably didn't know is that it's a cover of a song from 1982 by punk band Frantic Elevators

Since I mentioned The Supremes version of Someday We'll Be Together, it seemed like a good time to note that it is a cover.

The original was by Johnny and Jackey in 1961

Another one you probably didn't know was a cover, from 1987

<embed src="//www.youtube.com/v/4BQLE_RrTSU?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BQLE_RrTSU

Originally recorded by Franke and the Knockouts in 1981. Franke Previte wrote the song.

<embed src="//www.youtube.com/v/RquN0kdR9qE?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RquN0kdR9qE

They used the Franke and the Knockouts version when filming Dirty Dancing but ultimately failed to get the rights and had to have Medley and Warnes record it. Patrick Swayze reportedly preferred the original.

Sort of, but not exactly. Previte indeed wrote the song, but he wrote it specifically for the movie. He recorded a demo of it, but the producers didn't plan to use his version. That demo was then later recorded on a reissue of that Franke and Knockouts 1981 album - it didn't appear on the original because it hadn't be written yet.

Had the song been written and released earlier - it would not have been eligible for the Best Original Song Academy Award that it won for 1987.

In honor of the death of Paul Revere (of the Raiders) over the weekend, let's note that the band's biggest hit, Indian Reservation, was a cover.

I posted the Raiders hit 1971 version in Revere's RIP thread here:

http://boards.rebkell.net/viewtopic.php?t=82078

The original was by an actual Native American, Marvin Rainwater, in 1959

Arthur Alexander's version does not have the "Hunk-a Hunk-a Burning Love" outro

One of my favorite recent covers is Clapton's rendition of Little Wing on his Live in San Diego album (with Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramhall II).

This Hendrix piece is obviously oft-covered, but another one of my favorite (and different than usual) renditions of Little Wing is by The Corrs. If you heard this without knowing its origin, I doubt you would associate it with Jimi Hendrix.
