RU 13 ODU 9 13:30 1st half

7 of ODU's 9 points came from 3-pointers by someone who hadn't hit any before this game (and a dumb foul by Prince on the first of the two).

Prince has 6, Vaughn has 4 and Ajavon (who didn't start) has 3 for RU.

RU is dominating the boards, it seems.

RU 19 ODU 9 7:46 1st half

It's something like 9-0 over the last, oh, six minutes - your usual slow-motion RU run.

ODU has 12 TOs, on track for 40 in the game.

Prince is sitting with 2 fouls for RU. Williams has two for ODU.

14-4 ODU run with Prince and Vaughn on the bench. They're coming back into the game.

RU 45 ODU 39 15:34

A bit of back and forth, no real rhythm so far.

Prince now has 14 and Vaughn has 12.

Carson has 4 fouls, 6 team fouls on RU. Just one on ODU.

ODU 62 RU 52 4:11

Kia Vaughn just fouled out. Her last two fouls were kind of dumb.

RU seemed to have lost a step somewhere towards the end of the first half.

ODU 72 RU 55 F

RU just got completely out of synch in the 2nd half after getting something like 7 fouls called in the first 5 minutes. ODU did a good job taking advantage of that.

ODU leaders:

Triggs 14 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists
Lyons 14 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists
Green 10 points (5-5), 5 rebounds
Jordan 10 points, 3 assists
Walters 9 points, 5 assists

RU leaders:

Prince 17 points, 5 steals
Vaughn 16 points, 7 rebs
Ajavon 10 points, 4 assists
Carson 8 rebounds, 4 assists

Can someone explain what is wrong with Rutgers?

I understand missing Ajavon to start the season & having a young team, but they have three AA candidates in Ajavon, Carson, and Vaughn and also added talented guards in Prince & Ray. I just don't understand why they are struggling like they are.

Is it because it's taking a while for the freshmen to learn the defense?

They had about ten great minutes in a 40 minute game. That's not enough.

I suspect it's not so much learning the defense (although that is pretty tough for the frosh) as having the stamina to play in the system for a sustained period.

Or maybe it's something else. I don't really know.

At this point Rutgers has some making up to do in the Big East to even want to make the tournament.
