Move over, Ian Thorpe. A well-upholstered 12-metre platypus is the new tourism torpedo. And Australia's image in Japan may never be the same again.
The attention-grabber at Australia's $34 million World Expo pavilion, the platypus was chosen mainly because it was a break from the usual koala and kangaroo. And Japan is smitten.
On a visit to the pavilion yesterday the Prime Minister, John Howard, approached the giant animal gingerly, but other visitors have been more game: they walk straight up and pat it or sit on it.
Whether its best side is its bill or its tail has Japan, a nation of photographers, flummoxed.
Getting the whole thing in a single frame is nearly impossible.
And the biggest question, "What does it taste like?" can never be answered.
