SAN ANTONIO Apr 18, 2005 — Eleven "Mad Max" fans armed with fake machine guns were arrested after they surrounded a tanker truck while making their way to a movie marathon in a theatrical convoy.

As the group headed to San Antonio on Saturday, police received several calls from drivers who reported a "militia" surrounding a tanker truck.

Police charged nine people with obstruction of a highway and two others with possession of prohibited knives in addition to the obstruction charge.

One of the organizers, Chris Fenner, said the arrests were unfair. He said he didn't know why anyone would have confused the costumed crew recreating a scene from "Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior" set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland with a real threat.

"I honestly don't know how that could be, because 'Road Warrior' was so over the top," he said.

They did this in San Francisco in October, from the SF Giants Baseball park to San Jose, and nobody even raised an eyebrow! Razz And that stretch of highway is one huge speed trap with police everywhere. I commute on the upper leg everyday...

Good thing for California Girl Kristen Mann that she didn't get drafted to the SASS... Wink

Maybe the drivers are just tired of being "hi-jacked" at the pumps and it was feared they would overtake the driver and the contents of his tanker in order to short circuit the system.

Another possibility indeed... I think that's how 'The Road Warrior' started too... Razz Luckily I drive a carpool where everybody chips in. Because my ML 55 gets 16 mpg and it's currently $2.80 at the pump Exclamation And that's without the makeshift armor-plating...

But if you want low gas prices, head out to New Jersey Arrow

Quote:
NEW YORK - New Jersey on Tuesday became the last U.S. state to suffer an average retail price over $2 a gallon for gasoline, which keeps breaking nationwide records daily, the AAA motor club said.

Pump prices in New Jersey hit an average $2.02 a gallon for regular, though gas stayed the cheapest in the country thanks to lower taxes and nearby refineries, pipelines and ports.

“That keeps us on the bottom, which is a good thing, being on the bottom,” said Tracy Noble

Nearby refineries and ports? Confused All of a sudden that $2.80 doesn't sound so bad... Wink

Not yet... but I wonder how Mischa Barton of the 'The O.C.' would look driving down the road in one of these Road Warrior type vehicles... Razz Lucky for me, someone just sent me a shot of the drive, so we can find out Exclamation Arrow

Judge throws out charges on 'Mad Max' enthusiasts

    San Antonio Express-News

It was an ending befitting a Hollywood movie or, in this case, a re-enactment for a cult classic.

A judge last week threw out misdemeanor charges of obstructing a highway against 13 defendants who in April were arrested after they convoyed from Boerne to the Alamo Draft House in far West San Antonio in homage to the movie "Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior."

County Court-at-Law No. 8 Judge Karen Crouch dismissed the charges after a prosecutor said the case lacked sufficient evidence.

The defendants were arrested in April after authorities received several calls from motorists near U.S. 151 and Loop 410 who said they spotted the convoy, which included several vehicles riding alongside a tanker truck.

About 25 people were part of the convoy, with several carrying fake machine guns and knives.

They were on their way to a movie marathon at the Alamo Draft House, which was canceled after the arrests.

Looks like they fought the law and the law lost Exclamation
