DRAFT STEAL, DRAFT STEAL
Think Merlakia Jones as a point guard... with tremendous strength.

5'8", very strong for a guard, athletic, great vertical leap, nice pull-up jumper, rebounds well, recently made transition to point guard.
She scored 40 in her final game of the WNBL season. She is a fantastic player and a future Opals starting point guard.
Averaged 13.7 points, 8.8 rebounds and 5.3 assists in the WNBL regular season. Dare I say it? Ok I will - she has the potential to be better than Lindsay Whalen. |

That's a big question. Could turn to be like the Batkovic/Seattle thing.
Debbie Black retiring makes it interesting as well. But with the 2006 World Champs next year as well, in theory it could be this year, 2006, or 2007. She's only 19 and is getting better and better, so we all play the waiting game till an announcement is made.
Did anyone even know she had nominated for the draft? There was zero mention in Oz, and usually a player nominating gets a mention in the press.

Or maybe not...

Her player agent, double Olympic medallist Allison Tranquilli, confirmed her selection by the Sun, but said she had contacted the WNBA and Connecticut to inform them that Phillips would be delaying her entry to the world’s richest women’s basketball league.

Yes, the much maligned Alison Tranquilli is apparently her agent. |

That makes the Valek signing make a little more sense. Perhaps the idea is that she can play back-up until Phillips gets here.
If she is this good, will she want to be the back-up to Whalen as she gets older. The Sun feel like a strange place for her to come into the league.

Probably not.
I think this is a sensible move though. She is only 19 and there's no need to head straight to the deep end immediately. Kristen Veal is a good example of how going over early can go so wrong. |
