Maybe she's the new Penny Taylor - always overlooked.

Um....huh? You think Ashley Battle will be the #5 player on this team??? Tanisha Wright is a better defender and scorer. I'll honestly be surprised if Battle even makes the team, and if she does, she'll be on the IR list. WHERE's MARQUES??? Did you see the Olympics at all? Trina Frierson will not be in a Storm uniform this season, but I believe Vodopyanova will. I expect both Bibby and Batkovic to be in the primary rotation.

sorry they weren't really listed in any particular order.

I don't think Nygaard is making the roster, but then it's Van Chancellor so who really knows. Tracy Reid will compete for a spot as well. Although, you might be right in omitting her from the list.

Oh, Ok. Sorry. I don think Marques will make the roster in place of Frierson, though.

well we know Nessa will be around awhile as Tina is out. I guess it depends on how she produces.

Reid is a lot like Canty to me...no outside shot. (Reid is 0 for 6 in three pointers in 116 WNBA games played) I'd rather Roneeka Hodges get the backup 2/3 minutes.

By the way, whatever happened to Gordana Grubin? retired? returned to Europe? I thought she could have helped this team if she wasn't injured so much last year.

To tell you the truth I think a healty, in-shape Kaczmarski will make the Sparks roster before Jaynetta Saunders, and I don't think both Robinson and Lindsay Taylor will make the Merc roster. Sui Feifei will make the Monarchs roster, most likely at the expense of either Chelsea Newton or Anne O'Neal.

Reid was a 5-11 power forward in college...like Charlotte Smith-Taylor before her...and LaQuanda Barksdale after her. Cynthia Cooper played her at the 2 in Phoenix, and it was a miserable experiment.

Roneeka Hodges would be a better choice for a wing player.

wasn't Reid a small forward at Charlotte?
I thought she was the 3 while Vicky Bullett was the 4 and Rhonda Mapp the 5.

Very preliminary Mercury roster/depth chart:

PG: Taurasi, Cross

SG: DeForge, Snell*, Moore*#

SF: P Taylor, A Williams

PF: G Jackson, Pierson, Christensen*

C: Vodichkova, Irvin*, Robinson#

* Yes, Snell can play both SG and SF.
* Moore can play both SG and PG.
* Slotted Irvin at C instead of PF, due to uncertainty about how the depth chart will look at PF.
* Christensen may play more at C than PF.
# Moore and Robinson on IR?

No shows?: Tuvic, Stepanova

Looking at other options?: McCray and Harrison

On the bubble?: Wright, Carey

Off the bubble?: L Taylor, Veal

This is pure speculation...training camp will sort things out...hate to see anybody go, especially some of my favorite people.

Perhaps Ashley and Kristen will have good performances at camp.

Yes but that was before the ABLer influx.

I like mb's roster.

Nuria Martinez will probably make the Lynx roster, meaning that someone else probably won't.

I expect someone else to end up with an "injury" instead, which is what Martinez had most of last year. Suzie likes to keep people available that way. (Also, Svet has real injuries all the time-- you never know when she's going to become unavailable-- and Katie's iffy for the early games; if things don't go great towards the end of her rehab, she could start the season on IR, meaning that all the listed players plus Martinez plus McDivitt could conceivably stick around.)

I think Martinez was on the suspended list last year rather than the IR. From what I remember the Lynx usually have 12 on their roster, 1 of which is on the IR. With Katie slowly coming back and quite a few of the players still playing elsewhere, I would not be surprised to see some more training camp signings this week.

She was suspended (unpaid, rights retained) while in Spain with the Spanish Olympic team; I thought she was on IR at the end of the season-- in fact, I think I saw her on the bench. ("Who's that? I 've never seen her play." "She must be Nuria Martinez.") I might just be wrong.

The Barn preseason game will be several signings' last chances to prove themselves to Suzie. Expect some fire from the bench...

Martinez never came to Minnesota last year due to her Olympic team commitments. During the gathering at the Barn earlier this year, the Lynx front office stated that they were excited about her coming to play this summer. With Kristi coming back and AJ's fan appeal, it would appear that the Lynx will keep all three point guards on the roster, which is what happened last year (Darling, Jacobs, and Edwards).

I must have seen someone else.

We should certainly keep 3 PGs around.

How and when did AJ become a fan favorite? (I'm not knocking her, I'm just wondering how & when.)

I think alot of fans appreciate her hustle but I think shes around for more then just being a fan fav. I think SMS thinks highly of the kid & thinks her can be a capable back up. Late in the season it was not Darling & Edwards running the show. In fact late in the season & in the play-offs it was mostly Darling & Jacobs at PG. Late often there was not much of a gap in the mins of Darling & Jacobs as I recall.

For instance In the win @ LA AJ played a huge role. Pointed for me was the fact that in the elimination gm of the playoffs SMS took the keys to the car from Darling so to speak & gave them to AJ late in the gm. The team couldn't hit the broad side of a barn & lost but that was a moment of training in my eyes. She's not at the top of any ones list but you work w/what ya got. Lord knows she's not the quickest but she trys to make up for that in other ways. If she takes better care of the ball I'll have no problem w/her. A yr smarter & stronger, I'm looking forward to seeing what AJ learned. I like the kid.

I think Martinez will be on as well. If there are 2 legit injuries I would tend the think cap wise they could afford to carry 2 on IL. I see Butts as maybe the one on the line if she dosen't show up big in camp. A trade of someone in exchange for a pick maybe ?

The problem with keeping Jacobs and Martinez and getting rid of Butts is that they'll have 3 point guards and no legitimate back-up for Katie. We know that SMS can run a two-point offense (like she did after Katie's injury last season), but would she want to?

Considering last year's roster and the fact that the Lynx drafted wing players, I would say Butts is the one on the hot seat. Without drafting a point guard, it would appear to me that the Lynx are happy with Jacobs, Harrower, and Martinez.

In regards to AJ, I loved the way she played last year also and I think she will play a key part of the team's success on the floor this year too. As a long time Lynx fan, it is especially nice to see Lynx players embraced by other Minnesotans in the way Amber and Nicole have been this year.

I agree.

If AJ stops turning the ball over quite so much she'll be fine. Unfortunately her turnovers had a lot to do with her lack of speed: as Gopher fans know, when your point guard isn't especially fast, it's a lot easier to trap her near midcourt.

The more I think about the roster the more I think we were right to draft wings: on paper we have several 2-3 or 3-4 types, but Lassiter's really a defensive specialist, Svet doesn't always show up even when she shows up (partly a medical problem), and Katie's recovery is still a question mark. If both Svet and Katie come out healthy and stay that way, then we have too many wings. If not, then we barely have enough.

We took tons of threes last year and didn't connect on them after Katie went down. I wouldn't mind seeing a three-point specialist in camp.
