The glitz and glamourhad been shut down for about an hour, but Steffanie Blackmon and her family remained seated at a clothed table with white folding chairs. The day that began with a catered breakfast and pampering fit for a star was supposed to be the exciting culmination of her college career.

People bubbled about her possibilities in the WNBA, even advising that she not worry about attending the predraft camp. Her agent pegged Blackmon as a top-18 selection, and the league flew her to the draft studios in Secaucus, N.J. as a potential top-15 pick.

She met NBA commissioner David Stern at his high-rise office in Manhattan, and dined with other prospects with all the fanfare of an expected top pick.

Midway through the second round of yesterday's draft, however, new league president Donna Orender walked over to Blackmon to try and lighten the mood. Empty tables and chairs were scattered around her, with commentators providing the only chatter.

"I don't know what's going on," Orender told Blackmon.

But as Storm coach Anne Donovan said, "She handled herself well."
