The final report is this, overall the league finished strong, increasing by over 100 from last week but failing to reach 7,500. I actually don't blame Chicago for the big drop from last season(-694), I blame New York(-1,025) & Washington(-2,249). If both of those teams averaged at least 10,000, the league itself would have averaged 7,700. Still less then last season, but a big difference.
RANK TEAM - AVERAGE (+/- difference from 2005)
1. Detroit Shock - 9,643 (+269)
2. New York Liberty - 9,120 (-1,025)
3. Sacramento Monarchs - 8,691 (+149)
4. Seattle Storm - 8,538 (-368)

Well, blame Washington all you want, but I for one am glad that the new owners have stopped papering the house with freebies that were counted in "attendance."

Of those 9,000, around 7,000 were actual bodies and 2,000 of those were giveaways. Don't blame Washington. Blame NY. At least Washington had reasons and isn't hawking buy 1, get 3 free sales to their final 6 home games. No seriously, a rep called, emailed and called again offering me 1 ticket in the $54 section for $45 to the final 6 home games, but I'd get 3 free to all of those games on top of that. Blaze must not have read the President of the Sun's article in USA Today because she really cheapened the product this year. I was waiting for the guy to offer to pay ME to go to the game. |

Hear ye, hear ye. And Chicago makes more money per game than half the other teams in the league. (Really.) Attendance numbers mean something, and if your team's numbers go way up or way down without a change in ownership, it's worth trying to figure out what's going right or going wrong (usually it's the team's record-- the Indy drop is weird). But we should all remember that there are limits to what attendance means.

a question: when comparing these numbers to 2005, do the 2005 numbers include playoff games, or is it regular season to regular season?

Key is revenue. Many teams are not yet turning a profit, even after a number of years. This is the main argument against expansion.

Or the main argument against keeping the same incompetent general manager for 10 years. |

A few years ago, the WNBA was about to have lower attendance than the prior season, and the last two weeks, reported attendance numbers went up dramatically -- and the league just beat the previous year's total.
This year, I noticed the attendance inflation (and I track every box score) about four weeks ago. Teams that were getting about 6,500 were suddenly getting 7,500, and the numbers just kept climbing.
Of course leagues inflate their attendance totals, and the total in the arena is never equal to the number of tickets sold, but I think the last month was a huge push by the league to get numbers up.
Do I blame the league? Not at all -- but no one should be fooled. Attendance was down this year, though still, in total, reasonable enough for winning teams to make money. Nonetheless, there should be some concern about ticket sales, and I don't think adding another 5-29 team is going to get many more people to come to games.

There's no doubt the Comet move to the Toyota Center has caused a significant part of our drop in attendance.
Besides the extra distance for the majority of ticket buyers, there is the maddening construction on both major arteries coming in from the west and southwest.
The last evening game against Phoenix took us an hour and forty-five minutes to get to and it's only about 14 miles from my home.
The team is aware of it, but there isn't much they can do about it. The construction is going to continue for years.
Even if the roads were fine (and they are a disaster as it is), the extra distance and time would cost us attendance.
