The Baylor-Michigan State game pulled a 2.6 rating.

While I'm glad that ESPN is dedicated to the women's tournament, I still strongly feel that the Final Four needs to be on network television. Before I came to college, I lived in a cable/satellite-less home and would have to mooch off my friends. Even MLS gets to be on ABC.

The Women's Final Four was on CBS through 1995 (ESPN started it the following year). Problem was, CBS insisted on having the semis on Saturday afternoon and the championship on Sunday afternoon. They didn't want to give up valuable prime time programming (and ad revenues) for the Women's Final Four.

I agree that it would be nice for it to be on network TV. But until it proves it can draw the ratings to make the network brass think it is worth paying the rights fees for and putting it in prime time, it isn't going to happen. And I don't want to see the semis and championship on consecutive days. Can you imagine how tired both Baylor and MSU would have been had they had to come back 24 hours after their two huge comebacks and play again? It would have been a very sloppy game.

Watching UConn, specifically Rebecca Lobo, on CBS in 1995 is when I was enlightened to the wonderful world of women's sports. I don't think the first couple rounds will soon be found on network tv, but the championship deserves the national exposure. However, it's similar to my job hunt paradox of needing experience to get experience.

At the tipoff, Roehrig would just be making it back down the court on defense from the night before. For the real though, I too had recently watched a bit of the '95 championship and the level of play has risen so amazingly in the past decade; part of the credit goes to having more than 18 hours to rest and scout a bit. (For laughs, watch the 6/21/97 Liberty @ Sparks game--ouch.)
