In a pattern that has gone largely unnoticed, white coaches have been holding on to their jobs significantly longer than black coaches.

In the WNBA....

There have been 48 head coaches in the WNBA, 30 white and 18 black.

The white head coaches average tenure is 81.7 games, 2.4 seasons. The black coaches average tenure is 50.7 games, 1.5 seasons. That's partly skewed by Van Chancellor, who has been on the job since day one, but even without him the white coaches tenure drops only to 75.8 games, 2.2 seasons.

77% of white coaches have coached more than one full season. 55% of black coaches have done so. 57% of white coaches have coached more than two full seasons, only 22% of black coaches have done so.

13 white coaches have coached 90 or more games. Only six have winning records. Only one black coach, Carolyn Peck, has been allowed to coach that many games without a winning record.

Every black coach with 100 more games coached has a winning percentage of at least .570. Of the six white coaches with 100 or more games coached, only Van Chancellor has a percentage that high. One, Brian Agler, has a losing record.

10 white coaches (Heidi Vanderveer counts twice) have taken over teams at mid-season. 70% were retained to start the next season. 8 black coaches (Shell Dailey counts twice) have taken over teams at mid-season. 38% were retained to start the next season. Every white interim coach that has had a winning record finishing their season has been retained, only 50% of black interim coaches that have had a winning record to finish the season have been retained. No white coach has been replaced at mid-season with their team having a winning record, two black coaches have.

Seven of the 13 current WNBA teams (Detroit, Houston, Indiana, Minnesota, New York, Sacramento, and Seattle) have never had a black coach. Every team has had at least one white coach. All but Connecticut, Houston, and Los Angeles have had more than one. None of the three folded teams ever had a black coach.
