I like Kristen Mann a lot, but Mia Fisher was really impressive today.
Erin O'Bryan looked as if she made her first shot and was just determined to shoot after that, irrespective of the quality of the shot.
UCSB really gave ND a fight.

Actually, Admiral, you didn't. I have been a Mann fan for a few years.

I didn't see the game, but Kilzer's going at it with someone on the other board about bad refing.
Was the game out of control? Did ND get some bias here?

Any time a team Kilzer likes loses it's because of the refs.

It was a much more physical game than UCSB is used to, but I don't think it was unfair. There are two blatant bad calls that I know of: The Duffy out of bounds call in UCSBs favor and the travel against Mann.
I think the refs for the Arizona St/Eastern Kentucky game were worse. I met Hoop at halftime of that game and we were commenting on how bad the refs were (many missed travels among other things).
I kept thinking about how bad the timing was on the Mann travel call, but I had it pointed out to me that we had a lazy pass the possession right before that resulting in an easy bucket for ND that probably was more crucial and I don't think the phantom out of bounds was too much earlier either.
It just wasn't meant to be.
Arizona St made Eastern Ky look pretty bad in the first half of their game (and likewise Eastern Ky made Arizona St look pretty good). I think Arizona St will have trouble with NDs zone, but Batteast needs to step up or else Arizona St probably has the outside shot to take em out.
Hopefully Mia raised her stock enough to at least get a look from WNBA GMs. I'm also curious if Kate's ankle problem can be fixed with surgery and allow her to play again? She seems to have so much still untapped potential. Shame on Mark for not getting her in more (if she was able, which she certainly looked like she was).
Is it just me or is there something wrong with the last part of this quote from Mark in today's paper:
Quote: |
"We've seen her score so well for four years," said French, "it's hard to not ride the horse that got you here."
Brandy Richardson's layup off a nice feed from Erin O'Bryan capped a 6-0 surge that brought UCSB to within 50-46 with 3:10 to go.
"If we had to play the game over," said French, "we probably would have just acknowledged the fact that Notre Dame had a great scouting report . . . and that it was one of those nights when Kristen wasn't shooting very well." |
So we are just too slow to adjust? and I read that to say the first option is Kristen, even if she's double (or triple) teamed? Am I reading too much into it?
Anyway, same ol same ol... Offense still needs work. I think the most disappointing thing is we didn't get any real experience for any freshmen other than Wilson. That's gonna hurt next year. This year was a tough year with all the injuries, but I have this sinking feeling we are gonna be in more trouble next year (hope they prove me wrong).
