...an old film I stumbled across this morning, college women's hoops in Missouri circa 1904:

They're playing on dirt. Asphalt existed then but wasn't used for creating basketball courts until much later. Dribbling on a dirt court is asking for bad bounces and turnovers.

Note that they're playing the old half court game, several of the players never cross mid-court.

yes, i got that pilight - it was a joke. actually, i think they're playing on grass, or what was. pretty intense defense by the team closest to the camera! i'm sure some where positively aghast at their behavior.

I was about to say that it might be grass. It's hard to tell from the video. Either way you don't want to dribble on it.

If you really care, plexiglass was invented in 1930 in Canada by a chemist named William Chalmers.

i don't think they had any backboard action in that video. the frame looked like just a guide - nothing but net.

Ahhh! didn't even think of that! saw the frame and through to the background and figured it was a glass backboard.

LOL!
It seemed like it was just a frame. I knew plexiglass wasn't around yet but I was thinking it was invented even later that the thirties (thanks pilight!)

It wasn't widely used until after WWII.

That's a terrific find.

Those must be glass backboards, not just frames. The made shot at the far basket was clearly a bank shot. The ball is then brought back for a center jump after the made shot. There is also an earlier missed shot at the far basket that looks like it caroms off the glass.
