Does anyone know the number of possessions per game in 2005? Does anyone know the average time per possession in 2005? What percent of possessions lasted longer the 24 seconds?
If 10 plays for your team lasted longer than 24 seconds, multiply 10 times let's say 4 seconds average = 40 extra seconds per game per team. Because of the 24 sec. clock, teams will be looking to shoot a bit quicker. Add another 40 seconds per team. Your team should get half of this or about 80 seconds. That's about 4 to 8 possessions. Score on 40% of them(2pts), an increase of 3 to 6 points for your team.
The NBA plays 24 seconds possessions and 12 minute quarters, (20% longer game (40 vs. 48 min/game)) and average about 100 ppg with the 8 extra minutes.
96 ppg for the Sun. That is a 32% increase over 2005. Hope you are correct as I love the Sun!
This season will be FANtastic!

I just hope that no team averages under 70pts.

According to knickerblogger.net, last year's average was just short of 72 per team per game, with Detroit (76) playing at the quickest pace and New York (68) at the slowest...

Since we're losing our minds with this, you might as well put Miko at 20pts. 8) |
Now you're being ridiculous!

For the record, I'm just joking about her being a star. I'm sure Slovydal knows that I'm playing, some of ya'll though will think I'm serious just because I'm a fan of hers.

If Westhead's system works..(Ideally) (This is who I'm assuming makes the team...)
Kelly Miller -6
Cappie Pondexter-8
Belinda Snell-10
Ann Strother -6
Diana Taurasi -18
Penny Taylor -15
Angelina Williams-4
Shereka Wright -2
Kristen Rasmussen -3
Kamila Vodichkova-8
Gwen Jackson-5
Sandora Irvin -8
All right, that's 93 points...maybe I'm the ultimate optimist..but I think every player is capable of averaging that amount of points I've given them..Paul's system is run and gun...and geared towards offense..I think this is what Paul wants..so hopefully he'll get it.. |
I would swap Snell and Miller, and I don't think Irvin will score 8 ppg, more like 4.

OK, I ran some numbers off the 2005 stats...
I estimated...
69.16 poss per team per game
40.34 min per game
1.71 poss per team per minute
If every team played only full 30 second possessions they could only get 80 possessions total, but they actually averaged 138.32 total. If our max number changed to 100 via the 24 second clock where do we fall? If we go with 100/80 * 138.32 we are probably close with the resulting 172.9 possessions per game with each team averaging 86.45 per game (averaging means I ignore the fact that one team or the other generally has a larger share in any given game).
By my pts/poss by team for 2005 this is where I have teams scoring at for the 2006 if they followed their 2005 trends.
SAC 83.37
CON 89.99
SEA 87.96
HOU 86.62
IND 82.33
NYL 88.48
PHO 85.58
LAS 84.12
DET 78.90
WAS 84.50
MIN 81.49
CHA 78.46
SAN 79.83
What this fails to include is the fact that teams tend to speed up at the end of periods other than the final period where the leader often tries to slow things up. I imagine that the move to 4 quarters from two halves may mean extra possessions at the ends of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd quarters. I would need to do a lot more work than I am likely to do to get some estimates on how the W distributed possessions in the final minutes of the periods as opposed to the early minutes. However, this gives a pretty good rough estimate which could have scoring going up by 16-17 ppg with the 24 second clock...

I'm not yet convinced that more possessions mean more points. I think you'll see more pressure on the ball in transition which will translate into a reward for teams that can do that effectively, leaving alot less time to execute in the half court.
My guess is scoring won't go up that much over all and it might go down a bit. Of course the teams that can get the ball up quick and execute will score more.
Yea baby, go SUN! |

Excellent points, and I think you may have hit it on the head...the top 5 offenses could get a little better and the bottom 5 could get a lot worse leading to even less parity in the league. It will be very interesting to see how the brains behind the defenses decide to use the 24 second clock...it is only 8 seconds, but as a fan who came over from the NBA side, I often found myself wondering when they were going to make their move.
