Posted: 01/31/06 12:48 pm ::: Sign and Trade Deal tomorrow involving All-Stars? |

A tease from Matt Wurst:
http://www.wnba.com/voices/offseasonblog.html
On tap for tomorrow:
WNBA teams may begin signing free agents. The Detroit Shock have plans to announce a major signing and have even. Fans can chat with the signee tomorrow on the Shock's web site. At least a few moves that we already know about could go down, including a sign-and-trade deal with All-Stars.

Doesn't say the trade necessarily involves Detroit. Maybe DC?
And what does "...and have even." mean? Typo?

To do a sign and trade means it's either someone who was cored or who's a restricted FA.
There are 13 players who are either RFAs or cored UFAs and have been All Stars at some time in their career:
Marie Ferdinand
Becky Hammon
Lauren Jackson
Shannon Johnson
Delisha Milton
Deanna Nolan
Ruth Riley
Katie Smith
Michelle Snow
Tammy Sutton-Brown
Penny Taylor
Nikki Teasley
Ann Wauters
Hammon, Jackson, and Nolan are almost certainly non-starters in any trade discussions.
Ferdinand's pregnancy makes her an unlikely target for acquisition.
Johnson, Milton, Riley, Sutton-Brown, and Teasley have all been talked up pretty heavily on the boards as potential trade bait._________________ If you want a revolution, the only solution's evolve

Could be more than one of them - how 'bout Teasley for Johnson and the 4th pick, or if that's unbalanced Teasley and the 8th for Johnson and the 4th? Would that make sense - Teasley gets to be more of a scorer and maybe LA think PeeWee could be more effective feeding their post threats?

what would LA do with Riley with Leslie, Claw, and Christi Thomas in the fold to play the post positions, plus Whitmore?

Holdsclaw will play the 3...like she did at times for Washington...Whitmore will not be resigned, and Christi Thomas can backup Leslie and Riley...

But then what? Leslie plays the four and Mique the 3? I wouldn't have thought they'd give up Teasley for just Riley.

| FFO dealing Becky or Ann seems rather unlikely, but who knows...I wouldn't oppose to it if this means getting Cappie or a post player (I mean, a post player who can actually last an entire season).

| IMO, He would only trade Riley if he were to get a point guard or Cappie in return...getting DMJ wouldnt serve him too well since he has Ford, Braxton, Pierson, Cash and Farris...

Didn't they send it to Minny in the Katie Smith deal?
Anyway, Riley's name seems like a general consensus around here...

Yeah, I thought just a moment after I made the suggestion of Teasley/Johnson that maybe LA would like to know whose offense they'll be running before they make a trade for who runs it. At the same time, didn't LA trade for Holdsclaw before they had a coach last year?
I wouldn't be surprised if Riley got moved either. She had a pretty weak year last season, Braxton showed enough to suggest she could replace her (for much less cash), and Ford's offense is developing to help replace the post scoring. But Trader Bill's gotta get a point-guard out of it somehow, either from a pick or a return player (and Wurst's comment said All-Stars).

That's exactly what I'm thinking. Penny knows she'll get Blue so she'll trade Teasley. Riley replaces void left when Milton-Jones left (well almost)
Whitmore won't be re-signed. (I had been thinking Teasley to Minny for Williams, but this is more likely)
Makes sense for both teams - Detroit benefits from the trade a little more.
I've been saying for a couple years now that Teasley would be perfect for Detroit - I should be careful what I wish for (as a Fever fan...)

| Riley and Leslie? No real PG? (Dixon can play it sometimes, but I wouldn't rely on her as a fulltime PG) If the Riley/Teasley trade happens, looks like Penny is still going through that stash. |

They get something they don't need, a post player, and give up something they don't have good depth at, point guard. They've got two all world players, it's nonsensical to force them both to play out of position to accomodate Ruth Riley. Not to mention, Tamecka Dixon is a UFA so they'd be going with a backcourt of nobody and nobody.
I'm certainly not buying the notion of Nikki Blue being able to step into a pro team and be successful as a rookie. Only three teams in the history of the league have improved their record with a rookie (real rookie, not ABLers or other old pros) starting 10 or more games at PG; Phoenix in 2004, Seattle in 2002, and Los Angeles in 1999. Blue is nowhere near as good as any of those PGs.
When you've got two players like Leslie and The Claw, you don't screw around with inexperienced backcourts. Get some veterans who can get them the ball and shoot enough threes to clear the paint a little, two things that Teasley is good at.
What they need is competent coaching and good health. Overreacting to last year's disaster by tearing the team apart would be the exact wrong move._________________ If you want a revolution, the only solution's evolve

| Anna was in that special game between the NT and "WNBA All Star" team in 2004. So theoretically, she's an All Star even if it's not the "traditional" one. |

I like it. Though I would love to see Sophia Young in SA, they need a point guard that will play with the team, especially with Ferdinand out for a bit.

Well, out of the 13 FA All-Stars, there's not much to pick from. Why?
Marie Ferdinand - pregnant
Becky Hammon - cored
Lauren Jackson
Shannon Johnson - cored
Delisha Milton - cored
Deanna Nolan
Ruth Riley
Katie Smith - cored
Michelle Snow
Tammy Sutton-Brown - cored
Penny Taylor
Nikki Teasley
Ann Wauters
Nolan, Jackson, Snow, Taylor & Wauters will likely be resigned by their teams. This leaves only Teasley & Riley to possibly be traded.
Maybe Riley & Barb Farris to PHX for their first round draft pick??

i like the idea of moving DMJ,i would have traded her to PHX last year but for me the AD part does not quite fit.
I say DMJ for the 2

I want Cappie in PHX. I think DT can be more productive if they have another PG on the team to handle the ball to distribute to DT. And when DT has to she can still handle the ball. And with the uptempo style they will be playing works well for this. |

Interesting. Not bad, if I was DC I might do it but ....
considering the West post, would you use Chas at 5? Lyttle may not get to 100% this season coming off the knee injury, you think the Comets could get by w/this for much of the season & still win a title ?

I know Pilight. I like Snow, also. If Sancho was healthy, I would say her. I just always wanted DMJ on the Comets but not for Swoopes or Tina(that trade has been rumored before when DMJ was with the Sparks). I guess I'm dreaming. Alot of fans were saying let Snow go after the last game with Seattle and the series with the Monarchs.
I guess you are right, Mfan22. Melvin may not be tough enough. I still remember when Tina broke her nose. (At least I believe she broke it.)
