You can pick from among Katie Douglas, Ukari Figgs, Joy Holmes, MaChelle Joseph, Stacey Lovelace, Stephanie White, and Shereka Wright in the poll on the lower right side of this page at the Lafayette daily paper's site. I picked Stephanie, who led the Boilers to their national title in 1999 and helped raise the attendance at Mackey Arena following her vaunted high-school career that was capped with receipt of the Indiana Miss Basketball award after her senior season. Since I only moved to Lafayette five years ago, however, I'm interested in the opinions of everyone from lifelong Hoosiers (in the general sense of the term) to people who've only ever seen Purdue play on TV. What say you? |

Katie Douglas is my all-time favorite player, and she did a lot for the program. Stephanie did, too, and I don't want to make light of their accomplishments. Every player on the list deserves to be listed among the best. But for just out-and-out *best player* I have to go with MaChelle, who still holds most of the records at Purdue. If you never saw her play, you really missed something. I would love to see her against some of today's top players--I bet she would still be setting records. MaChelle, you ROCK!

Katie Douglas.
Her college career makes for a heart-wrenching and pretty triumphant story. She was one heck of a player and she continues to show that today. Really wish Steph and Ukari were both still playing.

Difficult choice.
MaChelle or Katie. I think that I have to go with MaChelle.
MaChelle had a little head fake that got the defender in the air probably 98% of the time. I never could figure out why that wasn't picked while watching film. I think that MaChelle was better at getting her teammates involved (of course that comes with being a pg-or it should!).
Katie was a better rebounder, but MaChelle was a better shooter and ball handler. Katie being left-handed was a huge thing for her.
MaChelle had a HUGE impact on Purdue's attendence. There were maybe 200-300 going to the games prior to MaChelle's career. They were averaging 2,000-3,000 during her time there. She really put Purdue on the women's bball map and made it into a place to consider going.
Trying to stay with positions or era played:
Ukari (1) over Steph (2 or 3)
Joy (3 or 4) over Stacey (4 or 5)
MaChelle (1) over Ukari (1)
Katie (1, 2 , or 3) over Steph
MaChelle over Katie
MaChelle over Joy
Of course the best ATHLETE that Purdue ever had was Corissa Yasen.

My heart says good ol' #22, Stephanie White, because she's the reason I became a Purdue fan...BUT my head says KATIE DOUGLAS!

Steph was from the Lafayette area, so I am not surprised she has the most support. She also was instrumental in keeping the program from crumbling when Lin Dunn left. She is a big-time local hero.
That said, I have to say Katie Douglas. Her versatility and career accomplishments put her over the top.
Caveat that I never saw Joy Holmes and didn't get to see much of MaChelle Joseph.

This poll means nothing. There is no way you can accurately determine something this way. There are too many people that never saw MaChelle play (and a lot of those that did are dead by now or hardly know what a computer is.) They played against different competition and each brought different skills to the game. IMO, Steph isn't even in the top 3.
