Aussie Opals team:
Stephanie Reid
Jade Melbourne
Samantha Whitcomb
Tess Madgen
Isobel Borlase
Rebecca Allen
Sara Blicavs
Alanna Smith
Cayla George
Lauren Jackson
Ezi Magbegor
Marianna Tolo
(Unavailable due to injury: Steph Talbot, Alice Kunek, Kristy Wallace)
Pleasing to see 2 relative youngsters - Melbourne & Borlase - make the final 12, along with Steph Reid, a point guard who has been very solid in the WNBL and has now leap-frogged the likes of Maddison Rocci & Shyla Heal to earn a spot.
I feel bad for New Zealand, who have had a rotten run with injuries to key players in the lead up to this tournament. Might turn out to be the difference between qualifying & missing out.

Any thoughts on who starts for this team? My first stab would be this, but wilder things have happened.

She doesn't appear on any of the lists I've seen of players going, and there hasn't been any social posts of her leaving for the tournament like there has for other players. So it seems unlikely she will be playing unless she leaves after the game. But with the match up against South Carolina coming up on the 11th, the same day as the last day of the qualifying tournament, even with the time zone difference not sure it would be physically possible for her to be back in time to play both, so I could see her opting to skip the qualifying tournament.

I like that 5. That would be my chosen combo as well.
But I have my doubts about whether Sandy likes that 5.
I suspect she is more likely to stick with Magbegor + Tolo in the front court. I could see her going Whitcomb + Madgen at the guard spots too. Hopefully I'm wrong.

This has really become a nightmare for them even though Tera Reed is in pretty good form. South Korea has to be extra mad about blowing it last summer as they match up favorably with Puerto Rico. Knowing that Kalani Purcell, Tahlia Tupaea, Krystal Leger-Walker, and Mary Goulding would be out even before the Penina Davidson and Charlisse Leger-Walker injuries, I wonder how hard that they pursued the real old guard to see if any of them wanted to make history. Micaela Cocks can still play a bit and they could have tried to drag Jillian Harmon out of retirement or something.

Final roster here:

The only current college player for them is Ejim. There is nothing that a college coach could do to block a player from participating, but some only some are very supportive. I know that they have to account for the late scratch of Kia Nurse and Spain and Japan running guard heavy lineups, but I think I would have preferred Quinn Dornstauder in place of Shaina Pellington as she is in good competitive shape even though some players have been working out together. |

No, that would be Serbia playing in Brazil not Senegal. Edited to fix error above.

awhom111, if three teams are tied in the group standings at the end, and they're 1-1-1 in the head-to-head-to-head, is the next tiebreaker points-difference in the group as a whole, or points-difference in those three games they played against each other? Thanks for your help as always . |

Thanks for that answer above. Now, if Serbia lose to Australia tomorrow, and then Brazil beat Germany by exactly 7, what the hell is the next tiebreaker?
It feels like it ought to be overall group points difference (so the Australia results would matter again), but this is FIBA. I could believe it's ratings coefficient or the drawing of lots or something. |

In a post-game interview, Lauren Jackson revealed that she will not be a part of the Opals 12 for Paris.
She had previously retired from Opals duties after the 2022 World Cup, so I guess she was in Brazil just to help secure the ticket to Paris, but understands that her body isn't up to a full Olympic campaign.
Pretty selfless move by her, because had she put her hand up to play I doubt they would have left her out.

It then goes to points scored in common games so Serbia is stuck at 138. If Brazil wins by 7 while scoring 74 or more, they and Serbia advance. If they win by 7 while scoring 72 or less, Germany and Serbia advance. If they win 73-66, Germany advances, but I am a little bit confused about whether head to head is applied between Brazil and Serbia or if the results against Australia then start to count. |

For those of us on the "Taurasi Olympics watch," Diana had the worst +/- in Game 1 vs Belgium and did not play Game 2. Perhaps she should pay attention to Lauren Jackson and give young greats the opportunity to play in the Olympics.

That's the type of player that we need in Chicago. A Roughneck.

She was very impressive in this tournament, and earned herself a place in the All Star 5 alongside Magbegor (tournament MVP), Bec Allen, Leonie Fiebich, and Yvonne Anderson.
