Now that Delle Donne is sitting out, the Aces still have about $142,000 in cap space, a salary slot that seemed suitably earmarked for Delle Donne. |
I don't think that money was ever earmarked for EDD because I don't think Washington ever gave any indication that they'd trade her there - because outside of their core (and recently added backup FAs) Vegas have nothing to trade. Kierstan Bell and second-round picks just isn't worth the conversation. |
That could be the case, but it's what Sabreena Merchant published in The Athletic. I probably wasn't clear what I was actually copying it from.

Yeah, I think there were a lot of assumptions that Washington would feel themselves obligated to take Phoenix or Vegas's pocket lint just because EDD wanted out, and Washington was like, "no, we would actually like value for her" and neither team had the assets to make the deal work.

EDD will look good sitting on her front porch. Rocking back and forth in a Rocking chair eating oatmeal. Retirement is the best thing for her.

Hate to say it, but if she want to enjoy the rest of her life with minimal pain, retiring now is her best bet. Like so many other greats, it's sad we don't get to see more of her silky smooth play.

The Mystics have signed Stef Dolson to a multi-year deal. The release notes she is a "two-time All-Star" but leaves out that she averaged 4 points per game last year.
To be fair, she's as good as anybody left on the market, but this is not a signing that is going to move the needle. At least she can hit the occasional outside shot.

The Washington Mystics exercised their option with Shakira Austin.

Purely speculation, nothing sourced, but at some point you start to wonder why teams keep giving up on someone who appears to be a fairly useful player for next to nothing in return. |

They seemed to give up on Egbo pretty early last year for whatever reason. Even with Austin injured and EDD being available infrequently, they rarely ever used her.

Egbo was also injured late in the season. I thought she did fine as a backup, but maybe Hatar is ready to play and is significantly taller.

This is Egbo's third team in three years, despite showing some on-court ability.
There might be more to the story than just basketball skills.

Agreed. She was traded for Amanda Zahui B the first time around. This time she's traded for a second-round pick and rights to a player who has given no indication she'll be playing in the league this year.

An interesting piece in yesterday's Washington Post on Thibault the Younger learning from year 1:
“I think there are certain things we value here in terms of our culture, accountability, being selfless, trying to elevate the people around us. And I had to think about that through the offseason,” [Eric] Thibault said. “Was I doing everything I could to create the culture that enables that?”
https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2024/05/08/eric-thibault-mystics-culture/
Questions I still have that I wonder if we'll ever get answered:
-Why not core Cloud instead of EDD? You'd at least have gotten something in return for Cloud. And why did Cloud choose to walk away? (Though she went to one of the teams with an owner who doesn't treat the team as a charity project, so perhaps that's why, and I can't blame her for that.)
-Did they call EDD's bluff on sitting out? If so, why? She's sat out before and that she'd choose to sit out rather than play for a team she doesn't want to play for isn't surprising. But how to the Mystics benefit from her sitting out?
-Is there general discontent among the players that the GM's son isn't qualified or hasn't earned the job he now has? Regardless of whether their feelings are valid, if the players don't respect the coach, it isn't going to work.
