This makes sense. **I'm also posting this on the WNBA Board if you want to pop over there for any comments.

Quote:
As salaries have risen for professional athletes, and as college and even some high school athletes have secured big-money Name Image Likeness deals, the liability for future earnings has increased significantly, the group wrote. That could keep some of the nation's top doctors and surgeons away from treating high-level athletes of all ages.

Quote:
"A prominent orthopedic surgeon who takes care of professional athletes has already indicated that his insurance will no longer allow him to take care of this population because of this very issue," Miller said.

Just one more reason for single payer health insurance. This malpractice (and other) insurance crap is killing our country and is one reason it's rapidly turning into a s-hole country.

What does this have to do with health insurance, single payer or otherwise? The subject isn't who pays the costs for medical procedures.

The subject is malpractice insurance for doctors—specifically, orthopedic surgeons who operate on ultra-income athletes and then get sued for tens of millions of dollars of malpractice if something goes wrong with the procedure or recovery. The issue is that the malpractice insurance premiums for these surgeons is becoming astronomical or not available at all. Surgeons will not be willing to take ultra-income athletes as patients if they would be personally liable for tens or hundreds of millions of dollars in a malpractice case.

This is a far more significant issue in men's professional basketball than women's because the men's annual salaries are so prodigiously greater.

One possible remedy for this problem would be state or federal laws that limit the amount of lawsuit damages in tort cases such as malpractice cases. However, tort reform is a complicated and long-time partisan political issue.

One hinges on the other. It's complicated, but you could ask my brother, who's a doctor active in the movement for single payer, if you don't believe me.
