The Sun Belt is ramping up now, having disposed of some of the lower-seeded teams--or did it? Last night 11-seed Arkansas State took out the 6 seed, Georgia Southern, in an OT thriller, 81-76. I will admit to breathing a sight of relief as Georgia Southern is the only team that has beaten my JMU Dukes twice this season. This was followed by a somewhat lackluster battle of terrible shooting featuring #10 Appalachian State and a weirdly lifeless #7 Louisiana which ended in a an App State victory, 51-38. The halftime score of this game, to give you an illustration, was 21-14 App State. One got the impression Louisiana didn't even want to be there.
On the other side of the bracket, #8 Marshall beat #9 Coastal Carolina, 60-53, and #5 ODU took out the 12 seed, Georgia State, 66-56. I didn't get to see these games because my ESPN+ app was on the fritz. Next games are Friday.

Please feel free to post other non-P5 tourney results in this thread if you wish.

I was working at the shelter Friday and didn’t get to see the early Sun Belt games, but JMU got a revenge disassembly on Marshall in the morning. Then I fell asleep and missed some of the others, but ODU beat Troy in a game that Troy has protested, and Southern Miss ended Arkansas State’s run. Texas State won their game but I was watching something else.

Today JMU took out ODU which had come to the court with revenge on their minds. Nope, said JMU. Kiki Jefferson had 22 and Kseniia Kozlova 20. JMU takes it home, 70-64. On the other side, Texas State was demolishing Southern Miss so badly that I didn’t even stay to watch the 4th Q. Final tomorrow.

In the minors, Gardner-Webb beat Campbell for the Big South Conference Title in a game that was fairly decent--for good high school ball. /s Actually not that bad, but coming from a better game to there it looked real cheesy. They will likely be a 16 seed.

Watching the semis of the Horizon at the moment. Northern KY and Cleveland State are in OT duking it out for the questionable right to face Green Bay in the final.

Just watched a very good C-USA 1st rounder between #10 UAB and #7 North Texas, which went down to the wire with UAB winning, 75-71. Of note, UAB’s PG is Denim DeShields, baby sister of Diamond. To their credit, the announcers did not harp on that, nor did they show more than a couple of fleeting shots of DDS and give one update on her during the game.

And in another C-USA thriller, UTSA knocked out higher-seeded Florida Atlantic, 69-68.

This is a Big West conference game, not WCC.

Sorry. I’m watching so many different games I lose track sometimes.

W. KY takes out UAB, 71-67, in a C-USA quarterfinal after Denim DeShields just misses a a shot that would have taken the game to OT a and then a UAB player commits a foul. On a side note, I don’t understand how a P5 school missed little DeShields, unless she was hoping for Tennessee which didn’t have any openings for either freshmen or PGs this year, apparently. Maybe later, Denim.

On the other court in the same arena, it’s getting close between Rice and UTSA after Rice dominated the first 3 Qs. (One of the UTSA players sports a purple-dyed buzz cut. I love it!)

And UTSA wins, 62-54! Some good coaching down the stretch by Karen Aston.

In some other conferences:
CAA (ugh): Hofstra takes out NC A&T, 66-59, and Hampton removes Delaware from the equation, 78-67.

MEAC: NC Central 57, Coppin State 50, and Howard put the hurt on Delaware State, 67-35.

SWAC: Alabama State70, Bethune-Cookman 61
MVC: MO State demolished Bradley, 72-53

MAAC: Siena 56, Fairfield 53

Southland Championship: SE LA 66,Lamar 57. This was actually much more thrilling than it looks. SE LA came back after trailing for most of the first half and it was scrap- scratch- fight for the rest of the game (not literally)

Vermont beats Albany 38-36 to win the America East championship. Yes, that was the final score. Ridiculous.

In a very exciting SWAC semi, Southern took out #1 seed Jackson State on a last minute 3 pointer by Aleighyah Fontenot. They face Arkansas-Pine Bluff, which earlier defeated Alabama State, 71-66.

In C-USA action, it was Middle Tennessee over UTEP,68-62, in a scrappy semi.

In the MEAC, it was Howard over a very determined MD-Eastern Shore team, 62-60, and Norfolk State 81, NC Central 59.

In the MVC semis, #2 Belmont took out Southern Illinois, 70-64, and #3 Northern Iowa beat UIC, 73-57.

A word about that last game. I watched to the bitter end because I was impressed by the fight in the seriously out-heighted UIC Flames. Those young women simply had no quit in them even when they fell behind. That kind of spirit comes from a coach who believes in you and makes you believe in yourselves. I think I might have found a new team to keep an eye on.

Southern University takes the SWAC and goes dancing, beating Arkansas-Pine Bliuff 62-53.

Over in the MVC, #4Drake is whaling the heck out of #1Ill. State in what is currently a 20 point bloodbath.

Iona takes the MAAC, beating Manhattan 73-60. That good with you, Queenie? I seem to remember you’ve been a fan of the Gaels.
