Game #1 of the Battle of the Blues! This is as big as it gets here in North Carolina. UNC Tar Hells have a solid junior class that all came in together for then new coach Banghart. Their wings score and rebound, supplanted by a little bit of help from a 6'3 player off the bench. Under Banghart, the Hells are no longer the run and gun team, but are more disciplined, playing tough defense.
But are they a match for the surging Duke Blue Devils? The Duke defense is built on a group of players totally bought in on the defense developed and taught by the coaching staff. Coach Kara credits her 3 assistants and the commitment of the players, several playing their first season for Duke. Watch the defense closely, the right on time rotations are a beauty to behold - Nell Fortner described them as the best she's seen.
These teams are evenly matched on paper and the game is at North Carolina. That could make the difference tomorrow. But the rematch will be at Duke in February.
Will the hot shooting whirling dervish that is Celeste Taylor be enough for Duke to pull out the game? Or will the balanced scoring of UNC's junior class be the difference? Duke has a BIG advantage in height in the post, with 3 BIGS to UNC's zero.
This is the first real matchup of two young coaches who've been assembling the team they envisioned when they were hired. Expect one of these teams in the Final Four sooner rather than later. One of the best rivalries in all of sports is renewed!

Ruh-roooh.
The Tobacco Road Rivalry rises from the dustbin of wbb history, under new coaches, all in my lifetime. Brings back memories of the days I was so enamored of GG (and wanted to help Sylvia with her hair, but that's another story....)
Lindsey, Alison, Ivory, Latoya....hope they're watching.

Sylvia's hair was the least of her issues. OMG - her wardrobe! Tie for "favorites" - "Bees on smack" or "Lion Medallions."
Yes, it's exciting to renew our rivalry - now with a decent coach on each side.

And officials deciding this game: 3 highly bogus charge calls going against Duke.

And Duke adjusted, now 21-21 at the half. Celeste Taylor sat most of the half with two fouls. Duke played 10, UNC played 7 players.

The bottom line of this game seems to be simply that UNC has more scorers than Duke does. They can go to Ustby and Kelly and get points.
Who does Duke go to to try and make up that 10 pt deficit?

Day-Wilson is trying her best to will her team to a win, but she's outnumbered. Can she do it alone?

4th period fouls with a minute left
UNC - 10
Duke - 3
You would think the team behind would be doing the fouling.

Deja Kelly has gone to the same spot three straight times. She dribbles from the left side, around the top of the key and down the right side of the lane about half way. Twice she pulled up for a short jump shot, once she passed inside to Utsby for a layup. That's been UNC's go-to offense down the stretch.

Those early bogus charge calls took out two Duke players - Celeste Taylor and Ashlon Jackson. And Shy Day-Wilson could not beat the four scoring Tar Heels.
That's OK - they have to come to Duke in February and it will NOT be a repeat performance!
Ashlon Jackson doesn't play a lot of minutes but her efficient shooting has been timely and momentum building in several games. Obviously, taking Celeste out of her game was devastating. But it's up to Celeste to bounce back strong now.
