I was not writing for any sites then so I kind of just neglected to cover the South American Championship at all. Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, and Venezuela qualified from that to join the United States and Canada.

Centrobasket was played over the international break and Puerto Rico, Mexico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic are the teams that qualified from it:

USA Basketball names their coaching staff:

Now comes the part where they recruit both Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese to play.

USA Training Camp Roster:

As always, seeing which players presumably opted out is the bigger news.

International ball confuses me enough.

Can anyone explain why Kamilla Cardoso is referred to as Kamilla Soares?
https://basketball.eurobasket.com/player/Kamilla-Soares/521171?Women=1
https://www.fiba.basketball/womensamericup/2023/player/Kamilla-Soares

Here’s Stephanie Soares under Eurobasket

What am I missing? I wanted to make an AmeriCup game thread, but seeing “Kamilla Soares” made me 🤯

Kamila Cardoso's mother's name is Janete Soares and that's what she's known by in Brazil.

She had to use her father's name to come to the US even though he's not involved with her, so here she's Cardoso.

So is Cardoso a lottery pick for sure now ? She looked like a totally diff player versus with SC .

I think we'll see a dominant Cardoso this year and she could very well play herself into the lottery. She certainly dominated Angel Reese yesterday.

A look at the Per40 Stats of 22-23's 5 best post players & Cardoso:

Aliyah Boston: 18.9p - 15.0r - 3.0b
Cameron Brink: 24.4p - 15.5r - 5.6b
Mackenzie Holmes: 29.0p - 9.5r - 2.4b
Elizabeth Kitley: 20.9p - 12.3r - 2.6b
Angel Reese: 27.4p - 18.3r - 1.9b

Kamilla Cardoso: 20.9p - 18.1r - 4.1b

These stats would suggest that she is the 2nd best rebounder and shot blocker among the 6. IMO, she's a Top 5 player in this class and has been since her Freshman year at Syracuse.

That would be true if they all played against the same level competition but we know that isn't true. Plus, a player getting 15min and scoring 8pts is not necessarily a 32pt/game scorer if playing 40 min.

Canada-Puerto Rico on the final day could be very interesting here, because 'Americas 2' looks to have an easier route to Olympic qualification than 'Americas 1'. Canada might give it their best effort to lose into second spot.

Colombia may have read this post in the locker room before the game. I guess tomorrow would be a test of how well Victor Lapena is teaching them the European dark arts.

So Canada have to finish top-three in a group with Spain, Japan and Hungary. Meanwhile all Puerto Rico need to do is beat New Zealand. Canada may regret not finding a way to lose that game today...
