Cal is off to one of the most remarkable starts in the country. It's not just that the Golden Bears are 11-3 overall and 3-1 in the Pac-10, though those numbers are impressive enough on their own. It's that Cal is tearing up its schedule with four freshmen in the starting lineup.

Kate Smith's column also highlights Aya Traore and Santa Clara's Kayla Huss.

Cal's fabulous frosh recruiting class is showing its muscle. It's nice to see Cal showing some signs of life after too many years as a doormat.

It will be exciting to see what develops at Cal in the next few years. Joanne Boyle looks like an early candidate for national COY.

Also nice to see Aya on at least some natonal radar.

Boyle played at Duke in the mid-1980s (she was friendly with Johnny Dawkins), then was a very popular assistant coach for 9 years. She was a great recruiter and very good at creating cohesion and chemistry among the players. Now, it is nice she can show off her Xs and Os skillset.
