The team is saying there is no timeline for her return:

https://sports.yahoo.com/uconn-guard-azzi-fudd-reinjures-knee-in-win-over-georgetown-teams-says-there-is-no-timetable-for-return-163301455.html

I am not familiar with college hoops and how to interpret things that happen with respect to how they apply to a player's future. The knee injuries are piling up for Azzi, first in high school, and now one that has happened and then been aggravated again here at UConn. What does this mean for her career? Is this the type of thing that college stars frequently overcome, or should expectations of a pro career be greatly diminished?

I'm really upset over this. I had an instant fan connection with her just about from the moment I saw her shoot. I didn't even know who she was; I was tuning in to watch the seniors. By the time the game was over, she was my favorite college athlete of all time (not saying much, until this year I barely watch college sports), and I was a UConn fan more than I have ever rooted for a college team.

I know I just met her, but she's my Azzi too. Smile I really want to be able to watch her play a full career.

it's really hard to tell the longterm prognosis... This was particularly unfortunate since it was her own teammate who 'did' it. Some players have had multiple injuries and still had good pro careers. Others have not. It would be sad for someone with her talent if it has a longterm effect or shortens her career...but sometimes life happens.

Remember Jackie G.? IIRC, she might have even committed to UConn at some point. And there's also Jackie Stiles....but she at least got to complete her collegiate career in fine fashion.

"UConn coach Geno Auriemma told reporters Friday afternoon that Fudd does not need surgery and that there is no tear in her knee. Auriemma said Fudd, who is wearing a brace, will be on crutches with no weight bearing on her knee for the next two weeks."

That's a bit misleading. The initial injury occurred when Edwards slid into Azzi in the ND game after being knocked to the floor. The recurrence was in Georgetown game and none of the UConn players were involved. Azzi bumped knee with Hoya player.

However, circumstances of injury doesn't make this any easier to deal with.

In fact it was a carom shot by an Irish player who ran headlong into Edwards, driving Edwards backward off her feet and into Fudd.

6-4 Egyptian Jana El Alfy, rumored to be the best 17 year old basketball player in the continent of Africa, is on her way to enroll at UConn and join the team.

Even if she doesn't play this year, which would use up one year of her four years of eligibility, her presence on the roster should help UConn satisfy the Big East's seven-available-player requirement to have a game.

Interesting: so having players on the bench who can NOT guarantee a minimum of 30 minutes playing time - if needed - does not meet the requirement, but having a freshman early-enroller on the bench who may be red-shirted, and thus be guaranteed to play 0 minutes, DOES satisfy them?

I don't understand your question, Conway, or your reference to 30 minutes. As I understand the BEC rule, a team must have seven players available to play in order to start a game; otherwise, the game must be rescheduled or, if it can't, be declared a no contest.

UConn has been teetering on the edge of this requirement for several games now because only seven players are medically cleared to play, and five of them have had injuries this season or have lingering ones. Therefore, any player added to the active roster, even if she never plays, will provide a little extra insurance that UConn won't have fewer than seven medically cleared players.

I don't know that this was part of El Alfy's decision to enroll early. I do know she was home schooled and has finished high school equivalency in Egypt. Maybe she just wants to become acculturated to America earlier, or get a jump on academics, or accelerate her education so she can enter overseas pro leagues after two or three years experience with a top US college program.

I don't see El Alfy entering a game but her eligibility is safe as long as she does not enter a game. It's a fine line but aren't "available to enter" and "entering the game" two different things?

Didn't a couple of games in a P-5 conference just get "postponed"? I'm waiting for the thread of outrage. Rolling Eyes Wink

so university isn't concerned about the minimum requirement -- 7 available/6 active is not the same as 6 available/6 active... they didn't play depaul as originally scheduled why/.?
