Brittney Griner supporters plan pot "smoke out" outside Russian Embassy

This is absolutely assanine and does not help BG in the slightest. Shame on these people for coopting BG's struggle for this stunt. I hope someone in her camp urges them not to do this.

Surely they should be vaping rather than smoking.

(But yes - I agree with the previous comments about it being asinine & unhelpful)

Yes. This is horrible, even for many of us who only know Brittney Griner as fans. For her... for her family... words can't be adequate.

The message that got lost in most news reports is that now BG will be moved from the detention center where she's been staying to one of Russia's penal colonies. Her attys are trying to get her sent to one near Moscow so they can continue to see her, but it's more probable she'll be sent east somewhere.

BG, who is apparently still in the detention facility, was visited by US Embassy officials but no actual news mentioned.

This is a long, detailed article from the New York Times about Bill Richardson and his controversial record as an independent negotiator in hostage situations. I am posting this neither to support or oppose his involvement in Brittney Griner's case. Indeed, I'd say there is information in this piece that could bolster either view:

Article from the New York Times on the worsening conditions facing the LGBTQ community in Putin's Russia. Bad enough was the 2013 law that bans exposing minors to anything that could be considered "gay propaganda." Now Russia's parliament is about to pass a legislative package that would ban all "gay propaganda." These new laws would prevent any representation of LGBTQ relationships in any media--including books, music, film, and social platforms. Activists fear there will be a clampdown on LGBTQ events in public spaces. And violations carry stiff penalties:

At a press conference on Wednesday, Joe Biden said he hopes that with the election over negotiations with Russia over Brittney Griner will pick up. He seems to be hoping that Putin will now negotiate more seriously.

New Washington Post editorial on Brittney Griner's imprisonment. I'm trying to gift this, hoping it'll work so everyone can read it. Sorry if this doesn't work.

In case it doesn't, here are the final sentences: "While making any trade, the president should remember who he's dealing with. Russia is not a state governed by the rule of law. Rather, it appears to be run by a gang of muggers willing to try to take anything they fancy, from a basketball star to a whole country next door."

Bravo!

You care more about righteous indignation and outrage than you do results. That mentality has made this process much more difficult than it already is.

LOL. I guess it's my fault that Brittney Griner was arrested, was imprisoned, and hasn't yet been sent home in a deal. Wow!

P.S. I don't work for the Washington Post and didn't write their editorial. Smile

I don't disagree with the sentiment. I just don't think it's useful. People just want to voice their outrage regardless of the results.

This is a positive development.

Basically, the Republicans lost the midterms and Russia has less reason to stonewall the US.

What is concerning is there is no mention of Whelan in that article. I hope he is still part of this exchange.

What I posted is from today’s msn feed. I see no date on it, but what Pilight posted is nowhere to be seen at that link. Pilight? how old is that quote you posted?

“Ryabkov's comments come as Griner, an eight-time WNBA All-Star, was moved to a penal colony in Russia's Mordovia region, her lawyers said on Thursday.”

I thought this meant yesterday. I still think that.

About three hours

Quote:
a State Department spokesperson fired back that Russia still has not seriously engaged in negotiations, no matter what Ryabkov said.
