"At the rim. That's how Vanderbilt women's basketball Coach Melanie Balcomb describes the athletic strides that have been made in the game over the past few years, strides that have brought it closer to its men's counterpart and made it more exciting for the casual fan. While the players have become more athletically gifted, though, many are concerned that those gifts have — in another, less flattering reflection of the men's game — caused a slip in their hoops acumen. "There are two things going on," Georgia Coach Andy Landers said. "There's a rise in the athleticism and the quickness and the height, but there's a stagnation of basketball abilities and sense. I don't see us improving fundamentally at the same pace as we're getting better athletes."

So the women's game is very much like the men's.

I am still not sure about the above-the-rim talk you keep hearing. Parker and Fowles were supposed to be putting on dunking clinics this year. Harris and Charles are supposed to next year. It's becoming an I'll-believe-it-when-I-see it thing. Sort of like an up-tempo Purdue team.
