I'm thinking about putting together a blog post that talks about how coaches did in their debut performances this season. My first task is to create the list of coaches and their debut year. I'm counting two types of debut, one is their first ever season as a D1 head coach, and the second type is a D1 head coach at a new team. Ashley Langford At Stony Brook is example of the first type, while Katrina Merriweather, who came to Memphis with prior experience at Wright State is an example of the second.

My main question is whether I missed anybody or have somebody on the list incorrectly.

A couple of related questions are whether prior experience as a pro head coach, such as Nikki Collen who came to Baylor after being head coach of the Dream should disqualify someone as being in their debut D1 head coaching season. What about Melissa Hodgdon and Vonn Read who are interim head coaches? I'm counting them as being in their debut head coach season, but I can imagine that someone might argue that the interim label disqualifies them. A number of coaches are in their first D1 coaching position but have prior head coach experience at D2 or another level.

My current list includes interim head coaches, and head coaches prior head coaching experience not at the D1 level.

If you are doing such an exercise is this how you would handle it?

1 Katrina Merriweather Memphis Tigers Wright State

St Thomas, in Minnesota, is new to D-I this year. Their coach is Ruth Sinn, who has been very successful with them in D-III.

Ashley Langford and Bridgette Mitchell were both assistants at JMU. Speaks volumes of Coach O's ability at picking 'em!

Wow, that had escaped my attention. Thanks for pointing it out. I've got to believe there's an interesting back story, I saw one blurb suggesting that transition from D3 to D1 takes 12 years and it's happening immediately.

The MIAC kicked them out for being too dominant. The Summit League, eager to add the Minneapolis market, asked the NCAA to expedite their move to D-I. The waiver of the 12 year process was approved in June of 2020.

There are discussions in the NCAA committees to cut it to five years

Do you put Tim Eatman on the list for Rutgers? He’s now interim for the year.

Good point. I knew CVS was concerned about the virus because of her daughter, but it hadn't sunk in that she was away for the season.
