it's hard to tell anything from most of these games. Usually the P5 teams have more competition in their own scrimmages. Some of the teams they play don't even have a six footer on their roster so especially for the bigs, it's just a walk in the park. I'm really not sure what the point is...

Yeah, that's all true. But especially for teams with new coaches or impact newcomers it's funto get a preview of what the team might look like on opening day. And it's a great opportunity for the benchies to get some confidence in before minutes get harder.

When Cal took on Westmont (NAIA) a couple days ago, they were actually losing at halftime, 34-42, before getting their shit together in the 2nd half & going on to win, 81-62… whatever that may say about the Bears for this year.

It's also nice to go against people who don't know all of your schemes and plays to see what works and doesn't against other defenses and offenses.

It's also probably nice to have your younger players play off a scouting report too - especially the young ones. To see what they can remember in live game action.

JMU plays Shepherd College on Monday at 7 pm. I am actually a bit nervous about this game, not because of the opponent, but in view of all the pre-season injuries, and because several years ago we lost one of our valuable players in an exhibition game. Hoping all goes without incident for both teams.

South Carolina should play split squads - an 8-player #1 against one opponent, then an 8-player #2 against another. Make it a double-header......

The McNeese Cowgirls (Southland Conference) under first year Coach Lynn Kennedy with four returners, four portal transfers, and six freshmen won its exhibition game against Dillard University (NAIA New Orleans) by the score of 93-40.
Kennedy prefers an aggressive, quick-shooting offense and a tenacious defense.

JMU won their exhibition against D-II Shepherd, 74-46. Pre-season First Team CAA Kiki Jefferson tweaked her knee in the first half and started the second but called for a replacement pretty quickly. Hopefully it's not serious as Peyton McDaniel is still not recovered from her injury of last year and we really need one if not both of them PDQ. We play UVA on the 9th. There were plenty of bright spots though, especially the play of sophomores Claire Neff and Jamia Hzell and. seniors Jaylin Carodine and Maddie Green, who look to form much of the backbone of this team.

South Carolina beat D-II Benedict 98-41. Starting guard Zia Cooke had apparently sprained her ankle during practice prior to the game, and did not play. She was listed as "day-to-day", but folks who were able to attend the game stated she was there with no brace or boot and walked around fine, so hopefully she will be ready to go on the 9th next Tuesday. They didn't need her though.

The Gamecocks started out really slow. They were not hitting shots well initially, while Benedict was flinging in 3-ptrs and perimeter jumpers early on. The Gamecocks only led 20-17 through the 1st period, and only led 24-22 at the 8:20 mark of the 2nd period.

They then turned up the volume, and out-scored Benedict 24-3 to close out the 1st half, and 50-16 for the 2nd half.

Transfer Kamilla Cardoso led the Gamecocks with 18 pts in 22 minutes on 8-9 shooting. She added 13 rebounds and 3 blocks. Aliyah Boston had a quiet 12 pts, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 steals in 18 minutes. Laeticia Amihere also added 12 pts in 16 minutes, with 5 boards and 4 assists. Freshman Saniya Rivers chipped in 11 pts.

Brea Beal, Eniya Russell (who subbed in with the starting unit for Cooke), and freshman Raven Johnson each added 8 pts apiece. Johnson also tied Destanni Henderson for the team lead with 7 assists. Beal also had 9 rebounds to go with her points....

Noles are in exhibition action and only lead D2 West Florida by 7 at the half. But Semarau is back and Isabella Nicoletti has seen playing time according to live stats.

St. John's threw an exhibition game against Adelphi on the schedule at the last minute. It seems to have gone well, with the Johnnies winning 93-58.

That's why UCLA usually forgoes the exhibition games and instead plays closed intrasquad scrimmages instead. A couple of weeks ago they scrimmaged against Gonzaga. And this past weekend the whole team was in Texas, and I'm surmising they scrimmaged against... I don't know who. Maybe someone reading this knows.

Lady Vols win their exhibition against Georgia College (where Kellie Harper's brother is the head coach) 108-44. As others have said, hard to read much from a game like this, but Rae Burrell definitely looks the part of an All-American. The Jordans (Horston and Walker) looked improved, and Alexus Dye looks like a great addition with the loss of Rennia Davis. Brooklynn Miles, the least heralded of Tennessee's 4-player freshman class (a 3-star outside the ESPN top 100), probably looked the most comfortable and confident out there with 6 points, 5 assists, and 5 steals.

Oh goodness, sounds like Ashley Joens (Iowa state) took an awkward fall 1 minute into their exhibition game tonight and went to the locker room. Hope it's nothing serious.

This evening, Maryland scrimmaged, I mean "played" Georgian Court. GC is a DII from NJ coached by former MD star Jaz Perazic.

Terps hit the century mark before the end of the 3rd Qtr, finishing with a 92 point win margin.

Interesting observations: Brenda handed off the acting HC baton to her Assoc HC, Karen Ashton for this one. Coach B has sent quite a few assistants on to HC jobs, the most recent being Tina Langley. I suspect this game was a little on the job training for Karen and a little mentoring by Brenda.

Hard to take anything away from such a lopsided and overmatched competition, but I was impressed by MD Frosh Shyanne Sellers. She was given a lot of PT with the starters and she looked like she has the skills to be a quality performer. Of course, until the real season starts, we won't know.
