The 2022 schedule will be interesting. The Women's World Cup is scheduled at an awkward time (as always). It's September 22nd to October 1st in Sydney, Australia.

If they plan to finish the playoffs by mid-September that means cramming the whole 36 game regular season, the All Star Game, and the Commissioner's Cup final into 14 weeks plus one weekend. That's do-able but it will mean more travel problems and little off time between games.

If they decide to finish up after the WWC it will mean pushing the finals into November. I doubt they would do part of the playoffs before the WWC and part after.

It's a real conundrum.

I think it may end up being a combination of players not in the WNBA and college players. Just like over the summer some college players opt to not play USA basketball because of classes, I could see that happening here, along with being so close to the start of the college season.

The 2018 World Cup was September 22nd through 30th. Since the Finals ended in a sweep, they were done on the 12th.

The extra games do not help this time around, but they will probably try to start the season as early as possible as they were about a week earlier in 2018 than 2019.

Yeah, the Worlds are pretty damn close to the same dates they've been in 2018, 2014 and 2010. I imagine the WNBA 'solution' will be the same thing - start in mid-May, cram the games in, finish with about a week to spare.

Hopefully by now they've realised that there's absolutely no need to play a 36-game regular season. I just don't see the point. Interest spikes dramatically in the playoffs, not for four random extra regular season games. Most teams aren't making money from these games anyway, so you're not increasing revenue by much, if anything at all. We already have games that aren't on any of the 17 different national broadcasters, so you don't need extra ones to sell. It just seems completely unnecessary.

I'd happily go down to 28 rather than up to 36, especially if it made things easier in a World Cup year.

How many players would want to play and risk an injury that close to their college season?

Can they miss that much time away from classes? I know that they can do virtual for some, but the grades that they get the first semester will determine if they get to play the second semester.

Will their coaches be happy with them away from campus for a minimum of two weeks? Longer if there is a training camp of any kind.

The Commissioner's Cup adds an extra wrinkle. They're not gonna want it in the middle of a bunch of regular season games.

Also 2018 was such a clusterfuck that the Aces wound up forfeiting a game due to travel issues. Nobody wants a repeat of that.

Easy solution: Get rid of the Commissioner's Cup, which is the stupidest fucking thing this league has tried.

Cancel next year's Commissioner's Cup but reward the two top conference teams by having them be part of the World Cup Team Laughing Shocked Laughing Rolling Eyes

So, was this cup just a monetary thing? Too much going on during an Olympic year anyway. Seattle's season got weird after this. Or, were their big 3 just damn exhausted coming back from Japan? I can't remember at what point Breanna got injured "post-cup". Question Question

The CC was just one game for 2 teams. Hardly enough to make a big change in the schedule problems. Send college players or a team of the players that don't have WNBA jobs. Let them practice all summer and play a bunch of friendlies.

They've not done that for 25 years. I really don't expect USA Basketball to start now.

They're gonna have to get moving, though. Usually there's a lull after the Olympics before the next cycle starts up, but because of the 1-year delay to Tokyo everything's coming up fast. The US currently have a brand new director, no head coach, and no named pool of players. They're already in the World Cup thanks to winning in Tokyo, but they're still required to play in the qualifying tournaments in February, which isn't far off at this point. And presumably they'd like to have a training camp or two before flying off to Australia for the World Cup, which they'll also have to schedule and cram in somewhere.
