Sun sign Aleksa Gulbe to a training camp contract. That makes me and should also make myrtle happy.

The Connecticut Sun announce that they have signed forward Alexus Dye (Tennessee), guard Delicia Washington (Clemson) and forward Aleksa Gulbe (Indiana) to training camp contracts.

Five As out of 11 teams and again the lowest is a C

An interesting tidbit about Connecticut in that article: "Connecticut, facing a limited salary cap, had a trade in place to move down the board on draft night, sources tell Just Women’s Sports. Instead, they were able to secure the player they had near the top of their list in Nia Clouden." I wonder what the trade was going to be.

I kept saying on Twitter in the lead-up to the draft that Miller needed to move down, even if it was a straight-up trade of #12 for #13/14/15/whatever. Because of the maths with how their roster sits the difference in base salary between end-of-the-first round and anywhere in the second makes a big difference to Clouden's chances to make the roster. Unless they think she's going to beat out Charles or Carrington, they should've traded down regardless of who was left on the board.

Thanks for pointing this out. I'll be bummed if Clouden gets cut because of this sort of minutiae.

If Clouden impresses in camp, I don't think KCharles or Carrington are uncuttable – at least, they shouldn't be. KCharles took a step back offensively from her rookie season in the wubble to last season. Carrington on offense was simply bullcrap overall as a rookie, and though she did pretty well in AU, I noticed she still couldn't hit her 3s with consistency (that was a problem for her in college as well – lord, I can't stand true SGs who can't friggin' shoot lmao). Both are surely better than Clouden defensively, but shooting (as well as just being a 1RP) is what Clouden should have on both of them, and Connecticut arguably needs a little more offense than defense these days. But then, if Jordan Lewis or another Camp guard who was able to sign for less than Clouden is just as impressive as her, and Curt Miller is content to let both Carrington & KCharles linger on, then Clouden is back to being screwed.

It still disappoints me that Miller made no effort to bolster his post depth. Players like SJones and Mompremier really shouldn't make this roster with ease, but at least one if not both of them will (or I guess Joyner Holmes lmao). The tightness of the Sun's salary cap again played into that, but still – you'd think there were productive overseas post vets out there who would've loved to get their first- or second-ever chance at making a WNBA roster, in which this would've been the place to do so.

It depends on whether Miller's priority is to develop his future starting point guard or find someone who can help the Sun immediately. If it's the latter, I would bet on Yvonne Anderson. I've watched her in a couple of tournaments over the last year. Anderson seems like a more well-rounded Shey Peddy. She's a smart veteran who performs well in big games and is more likely to adjust to a new environment quickly. And she's cheap!

I agree on talent; the issue could be when Anderson shows up. Italy just started their quarter-finals, and I imagine Reyer Venezia will probably go deep. She's a veteran player but an unknown in WNBA terms and to the Sun staff, so it's hard to make a team if you're not around.

Pilight has become the voice of doom. Whenever I see your name at the end of a thread, I know it's somebody being waived. I hate this time of year - I want everybody to make a team. Yeah, I'm a softie. So far, no big surprises, but now we get down to the tougher outs.

Looks like Carrington (who had a good game yesterday) and Clouden make the cut.

JThomas/(Clouden vs 32 yr old rookie Anderson)
CWilliams/Hiedeman
Bonner/Carrington
AThomas/BJones
JJones/(Mompremier vs SJones vs Holmes)

Pick three of the 5 enclosed in parentheses.

they could start Bonner, AT, JJ, and B Jones all together for a super tall lineup. But I guess that wouldn't make CWill happy and they gotta keep CWill happy. Still wouldn't be surprised to see those 4 on the floor together for significant minutes.

I would have thought S Jones and Holmes would be the easy cuts...but after the game yesterday, maybe not. S.Jones had a much better line than either Holmes or Mompremier. Of course can't go by one game. Who knows what's happening in practice.

Clouden is still a mystery to me since I haven't seen her hardly at all but I wouldn't be too surprised if both her and Anderson made the cut.

Probably too slow and not that great for shooting.

She can take Miller. A couple of hay makers and he’d be down.

After seeing Charles preseason stats - I knew that cut was coming.

Hopefully the Sun gets a bench this year. That's all they need

All five of their guards are between 5-9 and 5-7. Not tiny, but certainly smallish. I guess they can stick Carrington back there if they need more size.

Does anyone know if the casino offers any promos for tickets? I might be passing through CT this summer and was wondering if they do anything like a free ticket with a minimum deposit or anything. Not a huge gambler but if that same cash for the ticket can get me casino play, might as well, right?
