Runs Monday through Sunday at a neutral site in Jordan, which seems ridiculous from a travel perspective with india being the western-most team. Division B is planned for November. The group stage is the first three days with the big games on Thursday when the two games to determine the last two semifinalists and the relegation game is played. Top three teams other than Australia move on to World Cup qualification.

The rosters to the best of my abilities are below. Li Meng is apparently not going to play after being denied entry to the country and there are rumors that it is due to her military ties (Bayi is the team of the actual army and their players are technically active members of the military).

Day 1 recap:
http://www.womensbasketball247.com/2021/09/2021-asia-cup-day-1-september-27th/

New Zealand still cannot beat South Korea. Australia was shocking against Taiwan. They have a couple more games to figure it out although they have to play much better to not get embarrassed by China. That means that a very interesting New Zealand-Australia matchup could be on the cards.

Even for a wildly below-strength Australia squad that was a shockingly close result against Taiwan. Heads would explode in Australia if they somehow managed to finish outside the top-4 and miss the World Cup qualifiers.

Day 2:

Could South Korea surprise Japan? I know that they are missing arguably their two most important players, but Japan did send a roster with not as much experience playing together and did have to change coaches.

They would still play in the qualifiers and it would just kick out the fourth place team. I think that it would be pretty hard for anyone to defend Brondello's regime and how they handle the times that she is unavailable at this point.

Oh of course they would. Despite having looked in the making the trip, I forgot for a minute who was hosting the damn thing.

I did wonder if they might get rid of Brondello and start afresh after Tokyo. Scraping through the group stage with two defeats and then getting stuffed by the US must've been pretty disappointing, even without Cambage. The fact that a home World Cup is coming up so quickly might've helped save her. Awkward time to transition to a new regime, unless you've decided that the current one is a definitive disaster and needs to be dumped at all costs.

Yeah, I think it's quite possible that COVID19 is the main reason she kept her job

In the NZ vs Aus. game, with 5.47 left in the 4th quarter, during a time out, Sami threw out an "F" bomb on the bench. The microphones were at the bench. The announcers laughed, then apologized for what we heard.

Division B starts on Sunday with six teams. Kazakhstan was the presumed favorite and nobody knew what to make of Iran. It seems that the other four teams will bring naturalized players. Indonesia, Syria, and Lebanon had to settle for what was available, but Jordan made a huge splash and got Natasha Cloud to play for them.

I think Japan's W League is more competitive than we realize. I mean, yeah, the Sunflowers win nearly every title... but there's a bunch of very talented determined national team players on the other 11 teams. Their league probably needs salary cap regulations. But at the same time, I love seeing women make money.

Also, I've been following a lot of the national team players since the Olympics. They get more publicity in Japan than our players get in America. I'm sure the home court silver helped, but their W League teams already had big fan bases before the Olympics. The teams are also a bit older, from 1985. And their advertising and promotional material is very fan-oriented, rather than... whatever the WNBA is doing lol. Like, this is what the official player profiles look like on the Fujitsu RedWave website.

I translated it for you. RedWave wants us to know that Machida officially smells like vanilla and has a shellfish allergy. There's a ton of official fan-oriented content like this. Honestly I'm a little jealous. I wish teams over here thought of stuff like this. And the RedWave website looks better than any WNBA website, but that's a pretty low bar. Instead of looking at the NBA or NCAA for how to build a fanbase, I think our W should look abroad. Foreign W leagues are young like ours. We'll have more in common with them when it comes to growth and fanbases.

I think it may be more of a Japan thing than a women's basketball thing. After the forced merger, the men's league has made themselves a commercially viable league, which is quite rare in basketball (that's why EuroLeague teams fired the league CEO). Sports marketing just is not the same anywhere else in the world as it is in the United States so I am not sure how much it could be studied for use here.

True. But could the WNBA at least fix their atrocious website?? I mean that's mostly what I'm talking about. The details... a lot of details in official WNBA league content are poorly executed. It feels like the details are handled by a horde of D2 athletes with communications degrees. They all know a coach who knows a coach who knows the commissioner. And teams are not immune to this either. Not even my team. The Storm hired some hacks to do the most atrocious mural of our big 3. Don't google it. It's bad. As someone who works in illustration, it's offensive actually. There's a lot of very talented people in the city they could've contacted for the project. But they don't have a good art director to manage that process. They have a D2 athlete with a communications degree.

The pros dedicate themselves to all the little details on the court. The least the league can do is hire better web designers, art directors, event directors, and project managers. Don't hire the person who's some coach's cousin who needs a job. Hire the best of the best. You don't need to know a coach to know how to promote sports and oversee details.

Probably a good result for the Washington Mystics. Less chance of Cloud ever missing any WNBA games to play internationally if Jordan stay in Division B.

I wonder what terms were in the presumed contract that was signed to get her naturalized. Jordan is one of the countries with a history of non-permanent citizenship for situations like this on the men's side, but presumably they wanted to lock her up for some future tournaments too.
