Former WNBA MVP Lauren Jackson has been named in a 27-player squad for what could be her fifth Olympics for Australia at Rio de Janeiro in August.
Basketball Australia said Thursday the squad would later be cut to 20 players which will participate in four selection camps from March to July.
The 34-year-old former Seattle Storm forward has been struggling in her recovery from a right knee injury. Two weeks ago, she said "I wouldn't be doing it if I didn't think there was a little bit of hope." |

I can understand the need for a few extra "contingency" spots for players like Jackson, Tolo, Penaluna & Mansfield, but a squad of 27? Really??

On the bright side for WNBA fans, when you can't make it into a 'squad' like that, Jenna O'Hea's summers are looking wide open for the near future. |

Kunek was obviously pretty stupid and insensitive, but Cambage was throwing stones from inside a hell of a glassy house in criticising others for dumb or immature behaviour. |

Acting ignorant and making poor excuses for it>>> childish behaviour (going to a concert instead of training camp etc.)

A more general set of questions:
1) Where does Australia rank in the world right now?
2) What would qualify as a good outcome in Rio?
3) What would qualify as a bad one?
4) Is there a way for Australia to beat the U.S.?
5) And widening that, is there any sense that any single team is a threat to the U.S.? (To make myself clear, the Americans could certainly be upset, but my question is more about is there one team that has a significant chance to do so.)

1. 2nd in the world
2. 2nd place (or first ofcourse)
3. anything below 2nd place
4. Yes if Cambage is unstoppable again and Penny is healthy and doesnt get in foul trouble. Remember the last time. The USA had trouble with Australia and they were without Cambage and Penny was in foul trouble most of the game.
5. Australia is a threat and Serbia could give them a run for their money(15 pt difference maybe)

I mostly agree with Michelle, except that there's no way in hell the Opals are getting close to the USA.
If the USA really wanted to seal the deal they would cover all angles by including some guards who play defence. I know they're not going to do that, which normally I would say is a bit foolish, but this year it won't matter.

Answer to Q 5
Play that junked up Houston Rockets style.
Shoot and make a high number of 3s
Perhaps put some of USA's weaker defenders in the pick n roll (Bird, Parker)
Get lucky
Hope the USA play badly.
With above you might be within 15 in the last 5 minutes and have a chance to pull out a win.
