But to the larger point, no player has ever won the WNBA's Most Valuable Player, DPOY or Rookie of the Year having sat out more than 10 percent of her team's games. I don't see why the criteria should be different for Most Improved...

Historically, the standards have been much tougher for MIP. Only once has the winner missed more than one game during the season, and in that case (2007) the winner missed two.

You guys are all making valid points.

Remember that I said this about ten posts back. ^^

Ericka deSouza is a valid entry IMHO. So is Sancho Lyttle.

To recap: I've got deSouza or Lyttle (whichever one Atlanta puts up), Tanisha Wright and Langhorne.

Any others?

I'm glad nobody's brought up Temeka Johnson. A ROY should not be up for MIP, IMHO.

Nicky Anosike is having a really great season. Her sophomore stats are actually better than Lang's are. But Nicky had more success in her rookie season, so if we're just looking at improvement -- rather than which one is best -- I would still give the nod to Langhorne. (Of course, as a Mystics fan, I admit I'm biased.)

The debate here would boil down to, is it harder to go from marginal to very solid contributor, or from very solid contributor to All-WNBA level?

That's another case where you could argue either way. Anosike has vastly improved her post moves from a year ago, and she is among the most underrated post passers in the WNBA. She's in the mix for sure.

Speaking strictly for Mystics MIP candidates - my vote would be Harding. The Mystics current position in conf ranking to me is directly attributable to the play of Harding. I understand that this (so far) is the most complete season she's been able to participate in due to her injuries. But that in itself is an improvement. She was even being seriously talked about as an All Star. before mid season.

It seems the answer to nickv's question is a definite YES!

Depending on how you weigh different factors, different people pop up as deserving of this award -- Lang, of course, among them, but not alone.

Can somebody tell me who votes for this anyway? Is it the coaches or the media or ???

It is the media. Folks like Lobo and Lieberman are always talking about their votes.

Langhorne and Harding have certainly elevated their games. But here's what I don't get about Washington. How does a team have two MIP candidates, a perennial all-star in Beard, the #2 pick in the draft, as well as Ajavon, Currie, Melvin, and Sanford......and be 12-11?

At what point do we have to say we are overvaluing some of these individual parts, if the team as a whole is not exactly pulling away from the pack.

I'm not asking this sarcastically...but what are we missing?

Answer: because they have "Ajavon, Currie, Melvin, and Sanford."

They are?

I wasn't aware that anyone was talking about anything as the WNBA pretty much has been dropped from the national television spectrum and I think that it is going to contribute to a loss of identity to the league.

Because the #3 and #5 spots have been like a box of chocolates - "ya never know what you're gonna get." Both our primary 3s and both 5s have had outstanding games and games where they sucked. Mostly the latter.
