Part of is that new fans have pretty much zero ways of watching old games. I was suggesting that people watch the 2006 Finals as a way to introduce themselves to Tweety, but I couldn't find a link anywhere.
So if you came into the league later, you may have heard the names and people discussing how great they are, but it probably stops there.

I'm not trying to make this a regional/cheerleading rivalry, as it seems to me the Sloot/Yo competition really digs into how hard it is to compare players.
Yolanda Griffith dominated the paint. She had no offensive moves to speak of, but she got rebounds, defended and made her teams much better.
Courtney Vandersloot is an excellent point guard, can shoot, pass the ball and run an offense. An adequate defender, certainly, just as Yo was an adequate scorer.
So you have them both available in their prime, for a three-year run: Which do you choose?

Let's put it this way. If Sloot retired right now, would she be a Hall of Fame player?
Yo is a Hall of Fame player who was hands down one of the best defenders to ever play the game. Sloot, if she continues to play for 4 or 5 more years at the level she's played the last two years, will likely make it. If she falls off, she won't.
The problem is not comparing players, it's comparing a player who completed their career against one whose career is still ongoing and who is just now hitting their stride. As I said in an earlier post, right now this vote is an obvious one for Yo. But ask again in 5 years and it might be an obvious one in the other direction.

Chicago is on the coast....of Lake Michigan.
Neither Sade nor the song's co-writer are American, so their lack of US geographical knowledge can be excused.
It's similar to Paper Lace talking about the "East Side" of the city in "The Night Chicago Died". Chicago has a North Side and a South Side, then a part in the middle they call the West Side. There is no East Side, that's the lake.

Kind of like the lyrics to Africa as well as far as geography goes.

I know this won't be popular here, but Taylor beating Douglas by a 3-1 margin is just silly.

I think Taylor should win, but both are probably underseeded and destined to be undervalued as basketball history begins to forget them over the years. |

Thought Fowles-Hammon looked primed for an upset given Becky's fanbase, but Fowles is holding on at this point. |

Taurasi vs. Staley is embarrassingly close atm. Anti-DT and Anti-UConn crowd (plus the Cocks fans) must be out in force early.

Much as I detest the way some places refer to Taurasi as 'the goat', even I didn't pause for more than a nanosecond on that one. C'mon, people. |

It's a popularity contest as much as anything, sadly -- as Vandersloot over Griffith clearly shows.

I thought Staley was questionable to make the field

Questionable is an understatement.

There has to be a backstory as to why Naismith HoFer Dawn Staley is disrespected so much on this board because RebKell is the only place I see it happening.
Her contemporaries, adversaries, predecessors, successors and mentors admire her. So, I'm probably missing something even if there's no way she should be ahead of Taurasi in any basketball playing poll.

Most of achievements came outside the W.
If you look strictly at her WNBA career, it's good but not among the all time greats. She never won a WNBA championship and only played in the finals once. She never won any postseason awards other than the Sportsmanship award. She never led the league in anything except turnovers. What did she do in the W to rate among the league's all time greats?

Staley's career in the W was towards the end and we really didn't see her at her best except for her first few years in Charlotte. For those around long enough, her best days were in the ABL.

Fair enough but Dawn was never a stat player throughout her pro career (Dawn averaged 9.8 points, 2.4 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game in her 347-game career with the Richmond Rage, Philadelphia Rage, Charlotte Sting and Houston Comets). She was and is a brilliant basketball leader. Her intangibles are among the best ever.
