They cut Harris, Hebard, Ogunbowale and Shepard, but kept DeShields and Ionescu (and everyone who showed up who was already in the pool). Interesting that E.Williams rushed straight over to join the camp but Taurasi, Griner and Hayes didn't. |
Probably because she has the smallest chance to make this team out of those 4. Griner and Taurasi are obvious locks and Hayes also has a big chance.
I wouldnt take E Williams over Griner and Charles

The playoff elimination was tough for Williams and her teammates, but by the next morning she already had sent an email to USA Basketball Women’s National Team director Carol Callan asking when she could join the USA team. |
Quote: |
Staley said player sacrifices such as the ones Williams is choosing to make allow USA Basketball to continue to compete at a high level.
“That’s what being a pro is all about, having a desire to want to be a part of USA Basketball,” Staley said. “That’s why USA Basketball is always at the top, because we get the most talented, best players in our country to make that type of commitment.” |

Now I've got
(Don't get too hung up about position I'm just starting the Olympians)
Bird/Plum/Sims
Taurasi/Loyd
Stewart/Hayes/Deshields
Charles/N. Ogwumike
Griner/Wilson
Stewart, Charles, Ogwunike, Griner and Wilson is probably enough coverage in the post (even if EDD can't play and they start Stewart at the 3) That they don't need to add Williams or Dolson. Deshields and Hayes with a little Stewart, Taurasi or even Nneka is enough coverage at the 3 that they don't need to look at someone like Collier, A. Gray or Tuck for that spot. If Ionescu isn't ready than Plum's shooting, Loyd's breakdown game and chemistry with Bird and Stewart, and Sim's previous experience (she was probably going to be the PG heir in 2014) gives those players a leg up on say Clarendon or the Mitchell's.
Also that starting 5 is still pretty amazing and should be able to destroy any of the other teams offensively, and if you do get in defensive trouble just send in Sims, Hayes, Deshields and Ogwumike to shut down the other squad.

That's still assuming they get at least six of the remaining seven to show up to join them. I'm reluctant to assume that, given the absentees they've had already. Also interesting that Staley rode Clarendon/Plum/Collier/Wilson/Williams in the comeback against Canada. Makes you wonder if Collier might sneak in as a wing, if Clarendon has pushed ahead of Sims, or if Williams might make it as the rarely-used extra backup post. |

Finally an update article.

The pool of candidates includes four players participating in the WNBA Finals: Sue Bird (Seattle Storm), Breanna Stewart (Seattle Storm), Jewell Loyd (Seattle Storm) and Elena Delle Donne (Washington Mystics). Two others, Brittney Griner (Phoenix Mercury) and Diana Taurasi (Phoenix Mercury) were recently eliminated from the playoffs and will be added to the roster for the games in France. |
The exhibition games in France don’t start until 9/15/18.
No mention of Hayes in this group, so I have a feeling she needed to come when Williams did to be considered. She doesn’t have the clout or experience of the others to arrive late. Loyd doesn’t really have it either, so who knows about her. She still got a mention.
Quote: |
Sabrina Ionescu (Oregon) left the team after the exhibition victory over Canada on Saturday night at Bridgeport, Connecticut. |
Confirmation that Ionescu is no longer being considered in these games.
Quote: |
Following the game against Japan, the USA will play three exhibition games in France. |

so no Hayes this is getting challenging, but maybe EDD? EDD hurt is still better than most and she doesn't player over seas so she has a big opportunity for rest after the Worlds.
Bird/Plum/Sims
Taurasi/Loyd
EDD/Deshields
Stewart/Charles/N. Ogwumike
Griner/Wilson

Why is Bonner not in the USA pool? Does she play for another country. They could use her

Nope, she's still American. She was pregnant and not playing when they put a lot of the pool together, which is the only reason I can see why she wasn't in it to start with. Maybe they talked to her and she wasn't interested with the two young babies to look after. |

She’s with Macedonia now.

Really? They didn't even play in the qualifiers for EuroBasket 2017; bit of a leap from there to paying a ringer. |

Good for her. That'll certainly pay for a few diapers. This is one of the other drawbacks of letting the legends play on, and on, and on for as many tournaments as they like. Some of the players get tired of waiting and aren't even available once the US decide they might be interested.
(I didn't mean to sound like I was doubting you, by the way. I was just surprised. Sorry if that's how it came across) |

Based purely on the minutes tonight, it looks like K.Mitchell, A.Gray, Dolson and E.Williams might be gone. Assuming Taurasi and Griner show up for the plane to France as anticipated, that leaves an actual 12:
Plum/Clarendon/Sims
Taurasi/TMitchell
Collier/DeShields
Wilson/Charles/Tuck
Griner/Ogwumike
So I guess they take that lot to Antibes, and then cut as necessary when and if the players from the Finals show up. |

I wonder if we'll end up playing DT at SF. That looks like the weakest area.
