Congrats to the US! I'm glad to see our girls coming together so quickly.
As far as the game goes, I think both teams played sloppy most of the time.

Which is why I'm not overly upset at losing this game. I doubt there was 100% given in order to avoid injury prior to the big show.

I'm not upset either--actually kind of relieved as I don't like our chances of beating this team twice in a month. It's like the law of averages. The good news is our stars played really well. Penny was amazing and Loz doesn't seem intimidated by Leslie or the Americans anymore. Speaking of Leslie, besides from a few timely rebounds, she looks old out there. The US offence slows down quite a bit with her. I would have liked to see Fowles get a few more minutes. Anyway, the Opals were right in there despite a few horrible TOs and the US made some good shots whenever we pulled in close.

Agree with everything else you said, but also, I mean yea the turnovers hurt ... but we only shot what? 44% from the field? We're a team of SHOOTERS that ain't right, and I expect that number to pick up once the real business starts.

Looks too me like Lisa's trying too hard to compete with Candace.
And I think the three games in a row got to her.
Lawson impressed me today, really proved she deserved the spot on the team, IMO.
I don't expect the Opals too shoot this badly against the USA again, but I also don't expect Katie, Diana, and Tina too shoot as badly as they did this game, against the Opals again.

I don't know about competing with Candace (maybe Fowles), but in today's game, she and her teammates still behaved like she was their no. 1 scoring option, which is no longer the case. I hope they keep pounding the ball into her during the Olympics because she is definitely having issues with her ball control. Let's just say I can see why Loz is no longer intimidated by the mighty LLL.

4 point game? I've gotta be happy with that.
(Not as happy as I was with the Boomers tonight though. They're really improving)
As for our poor shooting % in this game... we don't ever seem to shoot well against the USA. They're traditionally good at keeping the pressure on us compared to other countries. You don't tend to get a lot of easy looks against them. (Not that I saw any of this game - I'm just speaking on past experience)

Agreed! Millsy had a pretty great game considering he was way undersized and inexperienced against the US!

They are Plus/Minus values for players and teams. Team USA outscored its opponents by 49 points.
The player numbers show how well a team performed when an individual player was on the court. A positive number shows how many points their team outscored the opponent when they were on the court and a negative number indicates the opponent outscored their team when they were on the court. It comes from a technique introduced in Hockey to determine player value, but has proven to have valid results in basketball as well. It has been used with the NBA for a number of years, but we didn't do any work with the women's game (on a visible scale) until 2005. pd_swanson has been tracking the whole WNBA since 2006.
